But do you think Diablo III will enable us to go into the water, i.e have ships and let us swim? That would be cool if they implemented it correctly, but I would rather play a game without it. It just adds an unneeded level of complexity. Having rivers of flame and shallow creeks > Full blown bodies of water. In my opinion, that is.
I liked the "see the monsters coming" idea. It'd be cooler if you could use projectile attacks to attack them before they arrived as well. Add in some mist, gloom, and you've got one frikkin' epic atmosphere. Swimming sucks, though.
Yep, wow is the only and first game to have swimming and water combat... It is also the sole aspect of the game, making any game that has swimming and water combat either a sequel/expansion/spin off to wow or breaching copyright issues.
On a less cynical and more constructive note, I don't really feel like water combat would work well in Diablo... About the only type that would is the sort that already exists in D2... in that there is water around, and monsters are in the water, and you can shoot each other, but you don't actually enter the water... maybe shallow water, like you can still walk in it... so the barb and other melee could get in on the action, then you could fight semi aquatic monsters.

"If we're actually making the game worse with no other reason than to be different from WoW, then it's a bad choice." - Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer)
Who the hell still cares about the inventory system? Arranging anything on a grid is non-realistic. Carrying more than a couple weapons and extra armor is non realistic. Running around with the gross national income of a small country in gold doubloon is non realistic. Who cares if one item takes up more space than another? Is it really going to make you lose sleep at night knowing that your Axe of Devastation is taking up the same space are you scroll of identify?
In a "computer game" based on A mythical world with make-believe spells and creatures I don't really care that my inventory is not actually represented as a giant sack strapped to my back. I just want a system thats easy to use and as efficient as possible so I can go out and summon creatures from the ground, spray face melting swarms of locusts from my mouth, then grab all the sweet loot.

i always liked the grid system more because it made the smart looter consider if the larger items were worth carrying vs a greater magnitude of the smaller ones. It made the inventory system more dynamic.
Swimming: no.
Boat combat: maybe, depends how they implement it.
Shallow water: yes.
I agree, If the boat combat was implemented properly would probably be pretty cool, shallow water would be awesome to see. As for swimming, i would have to go with no as well.
Longboats, Cogs, Galleys, Canoes, I have nothing against boats, I would have loved to have been on the boat from Act 2 to act 3 (and back again) and have gotten attacked by sea monsters.
I would have also liked to have been in the caravan from act 1 to act 2 (and back again) and have gotten attacked by bandits.
Even Baldur's Gate II had a fight on the deck of a ship, you couldn't go below deck or anything (which I figure would work like going down cave or tower levels), but a fight on a ship none the less.
I do not think swimming will work in a isometric game like Diablo as I do not recall many times when your character is not standing up. The only time I can think of is when they are dead. They could probably make some animations of your character getting knocked on their back when they get it with Knockback or something, but generally speaking your character is either standing, walking, running or dead. I think it should stay that way.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
i always liked the grid system more because it made the smart looter consider if the larger items were worth carrying vs a greater magnitude of the smaller ones. It made the inventory system more dynamic.
It doesn't take much brain power to decide if something is worth carrying around or not. All this really means is that if I want to carry around some larger items but needed room for smaller items, I would go to town and drop off the larger items to my stash then come back.
The only thing Tertis really did for me was annoy me every time I had to rearrange my inventory and make me go to town a bit more. I don't consider this to be "dynamic" or fun in any way, but I know some people really like this feature, I just don't understand why, other than for nostalgia reasons.
To answer the whole swimming possiablity in d3. diablo has never alowed swimming in the other games. i like the idea if swimming was added to cross a river or sumthing, but you lose some defense for a while. that would be fine. i mean giving the barb leap or sorc/tele you making them have avantage over the other classes. swimming is a nice touch to alow the other classes to at least take short cuts. this way tele/leap are still helpful since they won't take an armor penalty. Also this alows choice to the player to decide. If taking the short cut is a good idea or finding another way around better. i hated being a necromancer and not being able to cross a dam little river those ones in act 3 in d2. it made the game longer for a necro/zon/paladin/assassin and druid to get to KURAST!!!
yes run speed helps thank god for that.
LETS NOT MAKE IT ALOUD THAT YOU CAN FIGHT WHILE SWIMMING. Since thats just stupid.

"I Do not Consider myself to do Justice, But I Do not conside myself to do Evil Either."
there are ships that you can ride from continent to continent, you can swim underwater, and fight just as if you were above land, except the angle can be annoying. Swimming in general is kind of a pain in the butt in it imo too.
I was thinking whirlwind + water = whirlpool personally; although i guess it could have also been hurricane
going into the water and stuff, that would be interesting. But you have to remember that the camera angle WILL NOT CHANGE and they have said that many times.
So if you go into the water basically you would only see the top of the water, not your character lol. I don't know how that would make sense but yea, that's what would happen.
If they could find a way to have swimming I'd be fine with that, but fighting while swimming or going under the water might be a very complicated game mechanic for that camera angle not changing.
SHIPS is a very badass idea, even if it is NPC controlled.
If you could have your own personal ship at a docking area that would be very tight, even maybe a house of some type also. As for people saying that would be too much like an MMO, why the hell would you not want to be able to own your own house or boat in diablo 3 if they had that implemented?
It's like saying, we dont want more f^cking content so get lost!
Huh what? You dont want more content that kicks ass so your complaining about it? Don't really get that one lol. I'll take as much badass stuff as I can get, Including ships, npc or player controlled, and houses too. Cuz its just awesome.
