On the most recent image of the inventory, next to the character's equipment there is a picture of the class that you are playing.
Bashiok commented on this space saying that it is actually just a temporary img that was concealing yet another system.

There's something that goes there. Another UI element that was purposefully hidden.
What could this UI be? Perhaps the talisman but I assume that the talisman is going at the bottom with the salvaging artifact. I am also assuming that the mechanic must deal directly with your character or armor. Perhaps this is where charms are equipped to help customize your character. After all, we know that we won't be carrying them around in our inventory.
It could be something like a talisman/fetish/charms screen. You have things that attach to parts of the body and/or armor, and add effects.
So, instead of a charm just going in the inventory, a lightning charm might add resists if it's shield, damage if it's sword, speed if it's boots, mana if it's armor, vision if it's helm, etc.
These things could allow for a lot of customization for each character. Do want to put points into resist magic skills? Place your talismans on your shield.
I'm not sure if I have the ideas of runes right, but I think those are things that go directly into skills, if that's how it works, then this area could be a combination of the runes/charms, without taking up space in the inventory.
That's just something I think would be cool if they did.
Totally off-topic, but I want my Diablo numbers back, not some Times New Roman numbers or whatever that font is (I mean the 839 gold.) At least something more original.
Actually, I like the Merc Armor idea. It would prevent you from opening two screens and covering your whole screen like it did in D2. And it's directlly related to the inventory.
