Your all tripping, the items REALLY do not look that impressive, your just for lack of a better description, diablo whipped, and you would pretty much love anything they throw at you,
look REAL close at the items, they are ok ya, nothing to throw a hissy fit about, but seriously not that impressive, I know 15 year olds who can draw armor/weapons that would blow those away
No, you don't. Trust me. There are not that many 15 year olds in this world with that kind of understanding of form and volume. I promise. They would look like shit. If they COULD draw like that(let alone having the technical knowledge of making it into a readable icon at the size that it is) they would have a job.
If you would like to argue the fundamentals of drawing and painting that are necessary to create the icons you see, we can do that.

It doesn't matter how bad it looks, D2 looked "bad" by critics standards back then, and it still had awesome gameplay for that time.
As long as the Skill usage, overall action and dungeon design, boss fights, and runestones, all live up to the hype they've built, I'm fine with mediocre graphics (which even now I don't consider them to be - you obviously don't want them to put as much time designing armor as the designers of Mass Effect 2 or Unreal Tournament 3, do you?)

You see there is this thing, it's called an opinion. People tend to have different ones. Now, this opinion thing varies very widely between person to person, and most of the time a lot of people disagree about something. Just because they disagree though it does not necessarily mean they are wrong. Now remember, opinions are something we all have, and in things like aesthetic appeal, it's very hard to say someone is wrong when they disagree with you.
I just thought you should know what an opinion is since you obviously have no idea how they work.

Thing about these icons.... people either LOVE them, or they HATE them. Or they think they're just ok. One thing is for sure.. the hater tears are DELICIOUS.
lol, what are you on about? Most people are 'meh' about them - which isn't a great sign.

Yeah...and his opinion is that your opinion is stupid. Still valid, innit?
When I was trying to make my point in the first post I was trying to remember the game that the items reminded of but I couldn't remember the game. When I was looking for my FF7 strategy guide I found the game manual for Revenant. The items in D3 look like the items from Revenant, just that the D3 items look more clean and clear. http://pcmedia.ign.com/media/reviews/image/revenant003_640w.jpg
So the horse is beaten to death now... Just had to get that last thing out because it was driving my crazy at first.

Ewww.
Why would you compare D3's paper doll images to that!?
I'm beginning to wonder if you all can see properly. Every one of the paper doll items I've seen looks awesome. They're flat, but that's a stylistic choice for the paper doll. They're well painted and very distinct looking, far better than the POS ones from D1 and D2.
Also, for you all who keep saying the images will change by the time the game rolls out:
NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. A few might get revised or tweaked, but we're looking at final images here.
There's only so many artists at Blizzard, and for each set of armor (on one character and gender!) we're talking probably eight hours of work. So for each armor set a single artist would need about 80 hours. If they took their whole concept team and made them work on new armor art for the paper dolls (which would be iterated on and critiqued and changed as they went, further increasing this time), they would need something like a month solid of work on that and nothing else. At best. And that's just for armor--if you're complaining about other items too, you'd probably have to triple that figure.
Since even in the most recent videos we've seen the paper doll art is the same, they couldn't really have started working on this until quite recently. In the last ~6 months before release I don't think they can spare an entire department for a month, much less two or three.
Luckily for me, I like the current designs I'm pretty sure most of you all will too once you see them in-game. But if not, there's always the internet to complain to!

I have close to 20/10 vision so yea I can see properly. I should have said reminded me not looked like. Obviously the D3 items look better than the ones I linked to Revenant.
It does not take 8 hours to draw an icon, sorry. Try 20-30 minutes, for a good artist. That is, if they have their idea already set out. Maybe an hour if they are stumped.

They are ICONS. Most people are meh about ICONS because they are ICONS. The difference between good icons and bad icons is so insignificant that I'm shocked anyone even cares.

Well, the idea process is a very lengthy and research driven one. It may only take 30 minutes for a good rendering. But that's after it's been drawn out several times and gone through changes.
A lot more is going into these than you might think. Behind the flare of the icons is sound understanding of weapons and armor of the time period paired with originality to give the correct balance between realism and fantasy entertainment.

Most definitely.
There seems to be a lot of assumptions these icons are just throw up there, mirroring the rendered 3D weapons. The art aspect of D3 is amazing, many don't see it for how complicated it is to have everything flow together and hold the theme. D3 has taken on a Gothic/Comic/Painting look and feel to it. Speaking on icons in particular, you have to choose a viewing angle, one that suits the weapon and gives you an idea of its mass, shape, and art design. You have to draw each option out one by one. Maybe a grain filter is needed to make the icon pop more due to the color of the item and the background, or maybe it pops to much. They've put to much into this game to take the easy way out, even for the little things.

Well the fact that they have been developing this game for so long they should be. Just because they are the item icons doesn't mean they should be insignificant.
It's like building an awesome engine and putting it in a crap ass car.
I think all the UI in Diablo III is awesome. I'm especially a sucker for the stained glass theme going on. They did a good job mixing old school Diablo art with cartoony Blizzard art for the items. I like the thick, black stroke outline for the item icons as well.

Actually. The icons in D2 had a special magic about them. They were lovely. In fact, entire D2 had amazing art. That's why people have so high expectations about D3. Icons matter a little bit.
I don't find the icons in Diablo 2 magical at all. They looked liked bloated up images that ended up looking nothing like the item you actually wore to me. So far I'm glad they went back to paper doll models and it's nice to see that it actually seems like the icons will like what they do on your character.
Yeah, It is like building an awesome engine for a crap ass car Aegon, with some annoying professional "critique" going in at early stages of development were the car is still in early stages of development, and being called out for not being of a finalised 2011 standard, I mean, get real.

I never said I was a pro. And I wasn't talking about POS manufacturer cars I was talking about someone building their own car. It's like having a fully built 427 and putting it in a 1986 mustang.
You get real. There have been newer pictures of the items and they look exactly the same as the older pictures.

No his opinion is that no one can really like those weapons, they're just deluding themselves.
Read his post again and learn reading comprehension. I also never stated my opinion, nice try though.
