All of us remember problems with release and most of us were unable to connect to servers for very long time (thank god I was able to connect 00.30 and play) and I was wondering, how it will be on ROS release? There was few releases of expansions in previous Blizzard games and basically there was three options :
1. Log off and log in after midnight to activate expansion (WOW:TBC) 2. Log off from the game into character selection screen (WOW:Catalysm) 3. Game will offer you new stuff during play without log off (WOW:MOP)
I would like to play minute after midnight, so my question is how ROS release will be handled? Can we expect overloaded servers again?
Blizzard can only make so many preparations. Actually, it's the same for any online game and its company.
I wouldn't rule out server overload. Crossing fingers for smooth sailing right off the bat.
Actually, I'm still trying to figure out whether I should look for the physical Collector's Edition, install/play it ASAP or go for the digital download first and upgrade later. Hmm.
I went digital collectors for the extra character slots. I often just forget about the physical stuff.
I will probably play softcore to get up a crusader and figure out all the classes the first couple of days to avoid insta-ganks on HC due to server issues.
I don't think there will be server overload as bad as for D3V - they just didn't expect so many millions of players right at the start. For RoS, they have a better estimate (though they still need to be conservative to some extent, they can't just create servers for 15 million players and then just 5 million show up). But if there are too many players, there will be queues, I guess; we've seen this on PTR during stress testing.
I'm also still debating when, where, and how to get the physical CE, or just get the digital CE, or just get the normal version and upgrade later. I kinda want the physical CE box, although I'm not 99% positive I'll never look at that stuff... but I also want the en-US box which is just difficult to get over here in Europe. Might be in Canada in May, but I'm afraid the CE might be sold out until then.
I'm getting the physical CE box, and ATM i don't care to much to much if i get it before launch day, 11 hours in or 2 days after. as i have already seen most of the content in the game due to being invited to BETA so not to much new things for me except for the end boss fight and/or other stuff that might be locked out from the BETA atm.
as for the servers, i thing they are highly scale able right now, and i don't think there will be all that much load once the expansion is released, at least not in comparison to D3V launch. there might be some minor hiccups the first 2 days perhaps but after that, everything should be back to normal.

Some queue times are to be expected. As long as there are no errors or long queue times (say over 5 minutes), its acceptable.
Exactly, I don´t think that queue will be problem, even if it will be more than 30 minutes, I am willing to wait. When D3V was launched, mainly problems was with logon servers, game servers was without problems, hopefully they will be prepared.
there wont be any issue guys and gals. diablo 3 reaper of souls releases on march 28, 2014. on that release date there wont be any significant server issues.

1) Release date is March 25, not March 28 ;-)
2) While I don't think there will be any significant issues, too, and it definitely won't be as terrible as for D3V, never say never. A system engineer with that attitude is a bad system engineer. (In fact, no one who has ever worked with computer hardware/software or similar technology in-depth would ever say something like that ;-))
ha yes, i know when the actual release date is. I was trying to be clever here... i'm assuming there will be glitches and bugs on the actual release date of march 25 - so by march 28th i assume it will all be settled out. I probably should have put an lol at the end of my statement.
of course i will be trying to play on the 25th like everyone else though I just wouldnt put in for a day off from work for the 25th as it will probably be a waste of a day.

Ah, you got me. "BAZINGA" ;-)
To be honest, if I *knew* that RoS was unplayable at release, I would just order a physical CE and wait until it ships. No reason to be the first for anything anyways, especially if it just comes down to "who's lucky enough to get past the login servers".
But - from experience I know that I want to play asap, so I'll not fool myself here thinking I can sit still for a couple of days
I was thinking of taking that day off from work, but I remember when D3V was released that I couldn't play at all for the longest time. I'm planning on taking the day off on the 26th though, just in case of issues.
I think (and hope) it will go smoother than the initial D3 launch because of the pre-expansion patch.
From what i've seen in the PTR and from what they have said recently we will probably have all the RoS content downloaded and running on our PCs already from when the 2.0.1 patch went live... and then they will just activate/un-lock the content at Midnight (like #3 in OP's post). Maybe you won't even have to log out & back in.
This is just a guess / wishful thinking. But seems like something they could swing.
When PTR hit open status, the first weekend was stress testing. They put everyone through the hoops of various stresses....anyone remember those long ques? I think it's very important to them not to repeat history, and they are doing what they can to prevent that.
True! With the preload, that should help out quite a bit. They did something similar with MoP, I do not recall any issues then. I just think they didn't anticipate the 12 million in sales......
I think Drol hit a good point in #7 - they won't over-dimension the servers and rather have some queues. Servers are damn expensive, and if you know that a week after release only 2-3 million players will be playing, a company would be insane to have server infrastructure for 10 million prepared. As a player or system engineer I don't like this, but the decision is not made by either of them...
On the other hand, WoW player numbers are dropping so crazy, maybe they can put some of these servers to use to help out on release day. Of course, it won't happen instantly - again, queues are there to help deal with the issues while they re-route server load. We'll see. I wouldn't take vacation for RoS even if I could. "Never play on patch day" is still true.
I'm expecting a diminished version of the chaos that occurs on any release day for any online game. Hopefully they'll have a working queue instead of just "lol error 37 kthxbai", but even then I expect those queues will be seriously long. I also expect yet another howling ragestorm on the forums, because gamers.
To that end, RoS release day will probably see me playing something else entirely, because I'm patient, and have a ridiculous Steam backlog anyway.
