I still am trying to understand why you're spending thousands of dollars on this rig but you're putting that Velociraptor instead of even just a 64 gig ssd inside.

Have to agree with this - I can't imagine not having an SSD now. Highly recommend it.

I wanted an SSD but it was going to be over budget. I didn't think about getting one with less capacity like a 64GB. Even if I did I still wouldn't have gotten it. Probably because I didn't want an SSD with such little space. I was going to get the OCZ V3 480GB but that was $1200 and then I thought about the Intel510 250GB and that was $600. I'm kind of a go big or go home kind of person. But I know I failed on the SSD.
I am still going to get an SSD later on when I get more money, thats for sure. But for now the VR will do a very good job. And it's not like the VR is a bad HDD.

No you're right. The VR is probably the best HDD you can get. I just think you should've looked into the Seagate Momentus XT.
But as for an ssd, you gotta keep a close eye on them, but I've seen some decent sized ones go on sale for about a dollar a gig.
Tech products get cheaper everyday. I don't mind spending $1k for the SSD. It would have just went over my budget. If I had the room for it in budget then I would have definitely got it.
Anyways I talked to the builder couple days ago and he said its not going to be ready till the end of the first or second week of August .
This is your work computer? Is that why you're not building it yourself?
Yes and yes. But even if it was just for gaming I would have him build it as well. Which I will most likely do with the next build as my personal computer.
On a side note. I just bought a new desk and the surface is a white shiny laminate. Will the mouse have and troubles on it? I was thinking of getting a mouse pad.
EDIT: I got my answer on the mouse pad issue today. I bought a mini mouse for my laptop. I used it bare on the table and it was kind of slow. So I adjusted the speed and it was still slow on full. I used a mouse pad when the mouse speed was all the way up and I couldn't see the mouse moving it was going so fast. Pads make differences.
So a slight update. The builder called me yesterday and told me the computer was done. But he ran into a problem. The VelociRaptor wasn't working(very cliff notes of the conversation). He told me I had couple options(again very cliff notes).
1. He would give me his personal VR for a discount.
2. I could order a new one.
3. I forgot this one
4. And this one...
Anyways, since I didn't want a used HD and I didn't want anymore delays by ordering a new one I asked if there were any other options. Then I thought why not put an SSD in there. I asked him and he laughed and said yea we can do that. He told me he had a bunch of new SSD's so he is going to be adding an Intel 510 250GB SSD(my original choice). I should be getting the computer by mid to end of this week.
I'm kind of glad that this happened because I really wanted an SSD in the first place but couldn't have it. Then after all of your posts it made me want it even more. So now I'm going to have an SSD as my main.
He sent me a picture of it. It's not the best picture but it put a smile on my face. I added it to the OP.
I have to ask, Is getting a dual Xenon computer better than an i7 2600k? or a 990x? Your machine is God Like and inspires me to get mine, but alas my budget is a mere 2.5k, and that's pushing it. It is a marvelous build though I hope everything works out, and I want to see a making of video for this bitch!

The i7's are great, the 990x is awesome. My friend has a comp with the 990x and it's a beast but if you do to many things at once it starts to slow down. I needed something that could hyper thread like crazy, which this will.
The builder is making a video so when it's posted I'll link it here.
Yeah, fate never intended for you to put that Velociraptor in your machine. But that 512 ssd, did you get some sort of deal on that. Cause before you said you were afraid of spending the money on it but it's not like you're even going 128 or 256. So the impression I got is either you got some awesome deal on the 512 or you decided to justify the flat expense.

Not sure if the 250 ssd you're buying was too expensive or if the VR only being 200 dollars less means the VR was way overpriced.
Prices on ssd's are tricky though. They go on and off sale like crazy. When you said though your friend had a bunch of these Intel ssd's it made me assume he had some kind of deal for you on them cause he had a bunch of them. I hope anyway when I get my ssd that I won't have to pay more than $1.50 per gig. How much exactly did you pay for yours if you don't mind me asking? This one on Newegg is more than 2 dollars a gig.
It's that exact one I linked. He's building a computer for someone else and that guy bought 10 of the Intel SSD's then changed his mind and bought 10 SSD's of another brand. He didn't return the Intel's yet, so he is going to use one of those(new/unopened) and I'm going to buy one and ship it to him to replace that one he's putting in my computer. I'm still kind of sad that it's only a 250GB but I didn't want any deals. He mentioned another SSD that was supposed to be really good but I would have to order it and again that would have caused a deal on the build. Hopefully there isn't anything wrong with the SSD. I'm going crazy waiting for this thing.
Eh, 250 gigs is all you'll really need. I assume you're sticking an HDD in there for storage as well. And you got the sata 3 on that Intel one so you'll be screaming with that thing. I'm jealous.
I got my eye on a Crucial 128 for about $1.70 a gig. When I finally get that I can take that Momentus XT out of my desktop and stick it in my laptop. Yihuu!

I know right. I wanted 4 but was on a budget .

That speed though is pretty sweet! My friend's laptop with the ssd boots up so freaking fast.
