what is shallow then? I'm not saying that's not nice, heck everybody likes nice things. BUT, there is so much to diablo and life in general than boobs and money.

Agreed. Some roleplaying games focus on sexual things, but i never saw Diablo as one of them. In fact, people don't even really treat it like a roleplaying game at all. I don't think i ever, in years playing d2, saw anyone talk "in character." So i'm not sure why anyone would focus on things such as being able to make "chicks with magical powers" in Diablo. Now in WoW, every now and then you'll have some goofball running around naked trying to provoke others, but that's not really even roleplaying, it's just being goofy.

As for the name "Wizard," i think it fits well, especially after reading their discription. They are a more chaotic and powerhungry version of the Sorcerer/ess. It's a different look on an old concept. I mean, every RPG needs a class like this - a magic user that focuses on elements. I have personally never been a big fan of focusing on elemental magic, but i know a lot of people like it, and i'm glad they have filled that role in D3.

You clearly misunderstood his post. He wasn't referring to new players. He was referring to perpetual noobs--players who play for years without ever comprehending (sometimes even realizing that they must comprehend, haha) game mechanics.

Yes, but those players who don't learn to adapt will have plenty of punishment from not understanding the game - constant death. Like i said, it's more about how you play now, not how you "spec" your character, so those players will die in battle from bad choices in battle. Sure, they will be dying for a different reason than they did in D2, but isn't it good enough that they are dying? :P

The auto stats is a heaps bad decision aswell as it puts very experienced gamers who extensively play the game on the same lvl as noobs (stat wise) who have no idea what they're doing. Where is the reward in being a smarter more skilled player. and where is the desire for the new players to want to learn how to be better and improve themselves.

What experienced players? As soon as D3 comes out, we are all "noobs," but i guarantee there will be people running around on the release date calling people noobs.

Being a smart player in D2 was never really about your stat placement since everyone had the same cookie-cutter builds anyway. The real experienced players understood that stats were kind of a given, it was more about how you utilized your skills. And in D3, it looks a lot more skill-based, meaning, it's more about how you actually play on the battlefield than how you set your character up while standing around in the safety of town.

I don't understand why so many people don't support the automatic stats. If you really understood the stats from the previous games so well, you'd realize how pointless the old system was.

For example: There's a good chance they won't give the barb many magical abilities, so if you had the potential to put stats into the barb's intelligence (or willpower in D3 from what i've read) it would serve a completely useless purpose. No one would do it anyway, so why give the illusion that you CAN customize your character with stats if doing so would ruin the character anyway?

It's a little silly to see the same elemental damage types again. I'd imagine that a lot of people are relieved to see this, but i still don't understand how "cold" is an element while water is not. And what about wind? Why is Wind not an element?

Other than that, this looks promising. I'm glad stats have secondary functions like they do in D2 and WoW. I also like how the quests seem to actually have a lot to do with the game, and aren't just something the average D2 player would skip over.

    - Automatic stat placement
    - health orbs
    - automatic partying
    - spawning with items after death
    - minimap with dots for enemies
    - fully lit actors at all times
    - cartoony atmosphere
    - extreme mana regeneration
    - no tetris inventory
    - showing every item on the floor for five minutes after it being dropped
    - floating numbers above enemy heads
    - auto pickup

Do you see a pattern here?

If you don't then you're probably still a baby and ironically this game will be right up your alley.

What will be next, a giant floating arrow pointing towards the goal of your current quest?

Blizzard better be shitting me cause this isn't what i hoped on getting after years of being a fan of Diablo and routing for a new title in the franchise i enjoyed from day one.

I do see a pattern. They're perfecting a lot of things that were pointless in the others. Seriously, what role did light radius even have? It just limited how much of the graphics you could see. Placing Stats just gave the illusion of character custumization...i mean, if characters were so customizable and different, then why did everyone use the exact same build on their characters? The tetris inventory was simply annoying, and took your mind off the action in the game. It was just distracting. You mentioned health orbs, but neglect that there are no potions. Stockpiling potions is a poor way to make up for having a poorly equipped character.

And lastly, you mentioned cartoony graphics? The graphics almost look like a watercolor painting, which isn't cartoony at all. A lot of people complain that it isn't "dark" enough, which is silly, since D2 wasn't really "dark" either. I mean, you run around in a desert for an entire act - what's dark about that? And almost nothing about act 5 is dark. If you want a dark game, play Silent Hill or Doom 3, as they are dark in both a literal and metaphoric way.

That's awesome. I tried to save every bard i came across in D2 in bloody foothills. They were never very powerful, so it didn't actually help me at all, it was just cool to walk along with an army of bloodhungry barbarians as i went up the mountain.

I hope it's similar in 3. I hope you can save or interact with the npcs that are battling along with you.

Diablo 2 had plenty of "light" parts, i mean, does act 2 ring a bell for anyone? Running around in the desert isn't very dark. So i'm not entirely sure why people expect a "dark and gothic" game at all. I just hope the locations are unique and interesting, which, so far, they are.

is the "stat randomizing" thing rly true?

There's no stat randomizing from what i've read, but stats are automatically assigned to your class. For example, you're not going to get a bunch of intelligence on your barb, and you're not gonna get a bunch of strength on your Wizard. It will work like World of Warcraft, where you get stats that match your class.

You guys are all missing the point...

What if suddenly a law was passed than said you no longer have a choice between Soft Drinks. Congress has decided than Coca-Cola was better, and from now on it is the only Soft Drink that will be produced and sold.

I bet that would piss you off huh? What if you don't like Coca-Cola? I feel the same way when it comes to this game. Players should always be allowed to choose the path of their characters. That is what makes it a Role Playing Game. They are taking the "Role" out of it.

    Choice, choice, choice. PERIOD!

But it's not really a question of how you want to build the character. Just because you have the option to do something, doesn't make it a good idea. In Diablo 2, you can unequip everything and run out and get yourself killed on purpose. but is that a good idea? Not at all. you have the potential to do it, but it's just not a good idea.

The thing is, we're going to have the stats we were going to put in anyway. The soda example doesn't really apply, because some things simply don't work, like putting all your points into your Dex on a Sorc...that would be like saying "i only drink Soda that has been shaken up and sprayed into a broken glass, then left outside for five weeks." You could do it, but why? Game only have the options they give you anyway, so does that mean that every game that doesn't let you put in stat points into the main character is limiting? No, games only put in customization systems that work well with the games' other systems.

Maybe there will be a system to put players near players near their own level like in diablo 2? I mean, if they are auto-partying people, and promoting more co-op, then surely they will also make co-op possible and fun, rather than constantly helping people catch up to you. Although, i do hope there is an option for private games or a way to join with real-life friends and whatnot, because i love to solo just to see what i'm capable of, and i love to play with just a small group of good rl friends.

posted a message on Choosing character names: Player discretion or Blizzard's?
    Quote from "PhrozenDragon" »
Because how a name affects other people playing a game in a multiplayer envorinment. If I'm running around in a fantasy world, I may not want to team up will 1337barb, even if he himself doesn't find his own name troubling. Legolas pretty much falls under the same category, because it detaches you from the gaming experience by referring to the real world.

That's a very good point. On the other hand, it's up to the player to come up with the name. and if the player cna't come up with something better than BigBarb37 then i fear what kind of crazy "fantasy" names he might resort to using. I the player cannot come up with something good (that it lets him do), then it's really only gonna get worse. Even WoW with it's strict naming polixy has plenty of silly names that are apparently technically fantasy.

here's what i do, just for reference. i have a chars named

"Zerosignal" because it's a song name and has personal meaning to me.
"Ziltoid" because it emplies that i'm an intergallactic god sent to steal earth's coffee (but no one gets it anyway)
"Toxilid" - because he was supposed to be Toxicity but had to rename
    Descending - personal meaning

they are xertainly not exactly fantasy, sure, but they also aren't incorporating loads of numbers or disjointed names. i'm not "slipknotfanboy666" or anything, my names are somehat passable for a fantasy world. technically i could pronounce "Zero signal" as "Zer-uh-sigh-nal" and make it a name, sorta.

but what is in a name, for a flower by any other name smells as sweet...even if that flower be "Flowergurllol7", standing right next to "Lord Radimashia"

I dont feel insulted dying from a female character for two reasons.

    1, Not a sexist.

2, I figure automatically that it's a guy anyway. Which sorta counters my first one, but hey, it's the truth. Usually it's a guy, so the attempt at insult makes me smile for not falling for it

posted a message on 4 Players Per game?
But how often in D2 did you ever have all of the classes in one game? Rarely ever. Ususally there were 3 of one class, 2 of one, and then a couple others...so it's not like it limits anything. If blizzard made it so you had to have 1 of each class in each game, people would just complain that it was starting to feel too much like WoW anyway, lol. WoW usesa system where each group needs speciffic characters or the group cannot function. If blizzard did that to D3, there would just be more endless complaints.

I can't verify it, but it sounds pretty cool. It makes sense, too, since D3 seems to emphasize killing lots of enemies at once/in a row.

When i read this, I was afraid you meant "combo" as in a "punch + punch + kick = Lightning Double Back-Flip Monkey Attack" sort of thing, haha. I thought you meant D3 was turning into a Street Fighter game

    Quote from "mahamoti" »
Folks, I could not be a more hardcore Diablo fan.

In fact, Diablo 1 and 2 are the only computer games I have ever considered myself a fan of. Other games I never played more than a week...whereas I played Diablo 1 and 2 for many years each.

Today is Blizzcon and I should be more pumped than ever about Diablo 3. However, the more information about the game I learn, I must confess that I only grow more disappointed. This doesn't sound like a game that respects what we have come to love about the Diablo franchise, and I think I'm going to stop spending my time on the forums giving feedback and suggestions.

My reasons for having lost interest are the following:

    1) Poor graphics. As a digital artist who specializes in both 2D digital painting and 3D modeling, I have a keen eye for graphics. I do not appreciate the low contrast outdoor scenes, the low poly geometry, the excessive use of bright colors, the cartoony look, nor the lack of normal bump maps. I do not feel that the dungeons look dark or gloomy at all. It all looks incredibly cheesy and I can't believe they are using such out-dated low poly models. Come on. This is Blizzard, can't you hire some artists that are AT LEAST industry-PAR? This looks like the graphics from 5 years ago. It looks like WoW graphics.

    2) The inventory system has been demolished. One of the main reasons I loved Diablo was that it used the novel puzzle-style inventory. I thought this was obsolutely genious. It allowed the player to reorganize their backpack in a way that felt like I was actually reorganizing a backpack. That was fun. It also made big items feel bigger and more important than small items. It looks like a WoW inventory.

    3) I do not like the automatic distribution of attribute points. This is incredibly lame.

    4) I do not like the new skill point assignment system. It forces players to put many skill points into low-level skills before unlocking high level skills. It also has very few options about specific damage dealing moves, which are gained at low levels and simply buffed up throughout. I don't want to be using the same skill at level 90 that someone uses at level 1, and I don't want my only specialization options to be which buffs I choose to put on my lightning bolt, or whatever. I hear this is like WoW.

    5) I do not like the allowance for respeccing. It like to plan out a character and have to make good decisions that I will be penalized for later on. If I make a mistake, then that's just replayability. NO amount of respeccing comes without detriment to the games replayability. I think this is like WoW too.

These are my major complaints, and I hope that someone reads them and takes note. I am sure I am not the only hardcore lifelong blizzard fan who feels betrayed by Blizzard now. They clearly consider themselves the cat's meow, but I just hope they aren't so cocky that they have to wait until they see they are not getting the kind of sales they expected to realize that all their butchery to what made Diablo great comes at a cost.

    RESPECT THE FRANCHISE.

    1. I agree, sorta. I'm not wild about how everything blends together as a whole, because frankly, it doesn't. the 3d background doesn't look right with the characters somehow. But then again, it's better than WoW and WAY better than D2, so overall it's an improvement

    2. agreed aslo. I liked having to decide what i wanted to carry at all times vs what i wanted to pick up, it gave fighting for items another thing to think about. On the other hand, we no longer will have to fight over items...so...it serves its' own purpose

    3. personally i love it. But i am a bit biased, as i am a WoW player and i've seen how well it works.

    4. Once again, this works. Don't think of it as "low level skills" so much as "buffing up early skills." Trust me, in WoW you still use some of your level 1 abilities, but you ALSO use plenty of new ones. It allows you to pick your favorite skills and perfect them as you see fit. This is not a limiting system at all, in fact, it opens more doors than you would expect

    5. Respeccing allows you to change mistakes, or try out new/different ideas without actually having to make a whole other character just to get high level, again, with the same class you've already done it with, just to try it. I understand this may seem to remove some replayability, but first of all there's plenty of other classes, and second of all most people get totally bored playing the same class over and over again just to try out a couple things differently. putting one point into something else shouldn't require you to regret one tiny little mistake, otherwise everyone would play hardcore mode and spend all their time "replaying" the game every time they died. (granted that i did this for a long time, when i didn't have a job
