Smaller parties are more personal and enjoyable anyway, at least in my experience. I'm looking forward to the new paradigm and seeing how it shakes out in hell mode compared to an 8player modified game of D2.
Cutting the room size in half simply because of "graphics" is stupid. I'd rather play with four more friends and have less sparkle.
It's not just about graphics. In Diablo 2 eight players could plow through any part of the game easily, even the most challenging parts were a breeze, this isn't good gameplay. As we all should know, each time a player entered the game in D2 monsters got stronger to try an keep in challenging to the number of players in the game. Problem is though if they just scaled the monsters so high that it would have been challenging for either players, it would have caused a whole mess of balance issues among classes, and anyone who strayed from the ball of players even for a second.
Diablo 2 wasn't difficult in the least with eight players.
With four players challenges can exist, and actually be challenging.. Monsters can be scaled to suit 1, 2, 3, and 4 player games very well to keep the difficulty high, but not completely screw anyone who feels like wondering from the group for a second.
I don't think I'm getting this point across very well, because evry few seem to understand it..

how bout, blizzard doesn't want you to get one shotted in high # player games. and their very super secret *cough*, complicated and complex math system for monster scaling currently makes it so that you will likely get one shotted by 'harder' monsters past 4 players.
If I remember correctly, many of the videos we've seen feature long narrow bridges, or areas similar to that. And thinking back to maggot lair...8 players was just a pain. Not saying that bridges are quite maggot lair, but they're certainly more funneled than the open spaces of many of the acts in Diablo 2. So this might also be something that affected their decision, or at the very least, makes it look like a better decision.
EDIT: Re-reading my post, maybe it doesn't make much sense, but hopefully it does.
I would have to agree and disagree with whats being said. D2 was easier with the more people you had. But they have had the time to change that for some time now. I would have to agree with Winged that balance issues would come to hand if there was 8 people in games, but I would hope that they would figure it out going " Hey 5 classes... each has away to support each other making the challenge still there but people would have to use there brains." Like vinilla WoW that game was actually challenging but all classes had to support each other and people couldn't mindlessly hit buttons.
Also having to pick friends to play with you does kinda suck. I have 5 people that want to play all at the same time. Each of us picking a different class. To find out only 4 player and 5 classes...hmm doesn't really make sence.
They have said that the game will be hard with a full party. Just make it harder with 5.
4 Witch Doctors, 16 Mongrols, 4 Corpse Spiders, and 4x the plague of toads all on one screen. Still want 5?

When making a game it's all about priorities. Depending on their how they have their monster db set up, it might be tricky to balance it. they can spend time balancing it for 5 chars, or they can do something else, like... code new pvp mode idk.
here is likely how they balance it.
-monster= diablo, lets make him lv 30
-*looks on monster spreadsheet* lv 30 monsters have attributes str=50,agi=40,aspd=3/sec etc
-but hey it's diablo so we gunna multiply lv 30 monster attributes by 300% so he'll have str=150, agi=120, aspd=9/sec etc
-when X player joins we multiply diablo's traits again by some percent...
Their algorithm is probably something like this:
loop for the Number of players In Game {
if attribute=str then (playerNumber * multiplier * strOfMonster)
if attribute= agi then (" same as ^ ")
... etc}
we don't know for sure if all diablo's traits are multiplied by a flat amount or if there are different multipliers depending on what the type of attribute. If all attributes are multiplied by a flat amount, you can see that diablo's str will be so high that it'll one shot our characters.
Agreed. 5 classes 5 chars and a bit harder. Not unhappy but would prefer, maybe even as an update in the future. And according to your whichdoctor numbers, that's the equivalent of 1 maybe 1 and a half summoner necros. Again it's about choices, the more, the better imho.
Four players per game is perfect imo, it is going to be much more demanding on graphics, and it makes the game a bit more challenging in the later levels then just simply spamming the same spot and cleaning house, as mentioned above. I am in NO rush for another 8x Summon Necros spamming bone wall and mass skeletons.

Oh god yes. 4 players definitely help my aging computer out. Diablo 2 lagged on this computer with too many necro armies in a game.
I'd rather have the freedom to choose how many people I want to play with. Then again, I'm not a sheep in the Blizzard flock.
I like it how people are called sheep when they support changes that makes sense. Then again, I'm not a whiney crybaby who throws a tantrum whenever things don't go exactly my way.

I understand more than 4 players can get messy. But stating they know things can become messy and allowing people to actually choose whether they want a "messy" experience with all their friends (up to 8 or 10?) or a very "clean" experience with only 3 friends would be a better decision in my opinion. Freedom of choice is my vote, others have their own. Plus, I loved playing "players 8" back in vanilla D2 and having a reaaallly tough game with just 1 friend every now and then.
I just want to get peoples opinion on the four player partys. I know it hasnt been finalized yet, but im really hoping that they make it 5! It would make more sence seeing there are 5 classes. I just really hope that they go "People are right. We should go 5 people"
Tell me your thougths
I feel fine about it, thanks for asking!

AFAIK D2 will still be supported. There ya go.

lol
Except for right there, right?
Even if they stick to 4 players, they could still make game modes which support more players (and even form a friendly competition between them based off PvE). I made a post on this, if anyone's willing to read a wall of text: http://www.diablofans.com/topic/26647-players-per-server-poll-plx/page__view__findpost__p__626917
