Like many others I imagine, I have watched the new beta gameplay video numerous times, trying to pick up every bit of information possible. I noticed that the only shields in the video are used by one, the skeletons, and two, the templar follower. Not one of the player characters uses a shield.
Personally, I loved the use of shields in D2. Do you think that blizzard is lowering the usefulness of shields in D3? Maybe they're less useful for ranged characters, and (basically) 3 out of the 5 classes are ranged.
In fact, I imagine shields will be more powerful. For physical characters virtually all of their combat skills scale directly off of attack damage. If shields weren't powerful enough to compensate for the universal damage decrease one would receive for using a 1 handed item instead of a more powerful 2 hander, they would never be used and wouldn't exist.
I'm sure this will especially be true on the Barbarian, who has a passive skill that doubles his armor. This is making shields--which are already likely the highest single source of armor by item slot--doubly strong.
I imagine for Barbarian tank builds a shield and the Iron Skin trait will be pretty standard.
That video is nearly unwatchable. Just because you learned how to pan and turn the view doesn't mean you should do it constantly. (And of course the awful music.)

Turn view is essential for WoW PvP and the panning is just an effect in the video.

I think if he just blasted Dubstep it would be far more enjoyable, it would fit the camera work. (note: i don't particularly "like" Dubstep, but it's better than Black Eyed Peas, then again, anything is better than them)

Agreed. I'd imagine through popular demand and general balancing the team will try to have both any weapon class, and weapon/shield combo be viable. In D2 the only viable endgame weapons for the Barb were duel axes generally. I bet the team saw this from the get-go and will prevent this from happening.

All good points. So I think you have convinced me that shields will have a part in the game. I'm glad because i love to make tank characters with a good shield.
I hope in the next video we get to see some shields being used in gameplay.
Considering the fact that there is no shield-wielding archetype (paladin, knight, etc.) I think if anyone is to wield a shield, it would have to be the Barbarian. Ya know, in D2, a buckler is one of his starter items, so it shouldn't be too surprising to see tank-like barbs.
I love all loot fest kind of game! I will be playing all of them for the next few years. Loot fest games I'm looking forward to: LotR: War in the North,Torchlight 2,Borderlands 2 and of course Diablo 3.
something tells me within the first day of release every single question will be answered in this forum and every 1 will forget why tha f*ck they spent past 2 years discussing s*it that gets into troll arguments...
oh well after all i guess we'r just killing time

Thoughts?
Whether or not they intend to 'lower the usefulness' of shields in D3, is up for debate. I doubt it however.

I believe that.

He is ofcourse specialized in using shields!
I think if wand+ shield carries the same stats as a 2H staff why would anyone pick the staff?
Any sorc's in d2 using shields? Why talk about only barbs using them...
