During my life as a mmo player I made a lot of names, a few have stood out as being cooler than others. I keep reusing them.
Now... I just like very short names of 2 to 4 letters. Imo they stick better in people minds. I also try to not use Cliché sounds like for a female character a lot of people have a tendency to use an excessive ammount of A, L and N. Nalla, Anna, Allana things like that are so cliché and unremarkable.
I usually use Jaelzadeon for my main. It's a name I made up for my warlock back in Vanilla WoW, and I like it because it's my own. In WoW every one of my character names started with J, because everyone calls me J (in real life or in game). I won't do that in Diablo though.
I have a note pad where I've been writing name ideas down for my Diablo characters. I'm kind of OCD like that. I like to use German words for names, or other words/names I've read in books that I think sound cool. I have a list of male names I really like (Dmitri, Viktor, Vinzent) but I never play male characters...
I typically pick a name that I think either sounds cool for that play style character, or is some sort of joke. Usually an in-joke to me alone, but still something that I get a laugh out of. Basically, what Bashiok (I think it was Bash) named his female Barb - SnuSnu. Sometimes it's just some name that I think fits, like for example, any and all female wizard's I will be making will be called Azula, because I think her VC sounds a lot like the character.
Oh, btw, I agree with your choice of favorite scientist.
It doesn't matter. All you have to do is pick your Battle-Tag name. The character names are almost never used, in game or out of game. You'll almost never see your individual character name, neither will anyone else. You'll only see your Battle-Tag name.
Lol Ron Jeremy, it suits a WD well. My Username for everything is Prophiler, including my Battletag so I just mix everything in together, e.g Probarian, Dephiler, Pro Doctor, Wizphiler, and Monk.
For most games, I pick a prefix and then go with variations on it. Wydar, Wyrond, Wyrok, etc. or Tem, Temlin, Temtress, etc. For D3, I'm just planning to use Discworld characters in (mostly) amusing pairs. Like male DH SamVimes and female DH NobbyNobbs.
I am sorely tempted to make a male WD named Obamacare though.

...and if you disagree with me, you're probably <insert random ad hominem attack here>.
for my part i try to stick with one general theme of names per games.
ie; my d2 names were all names//nicknames of wu-tang members (one of my favorite rap collective)
ex: Linoka Astel (or just Astel)
my favorite scientist (anagram)
or just references to stuff I like:
ex: Spacker
reference to Yogscast (Yogpod)
or, if i'm really bored, google translate words...

Pretty much, B.net id shows up everywhere except chat and dialogue...
I named my monk Asura, my Barbarian Hrafntyr (Raven God) and my Demon Hunter Carnifex (Butcher) i.e.
I'm not very fond of "stupid" names like "Supahkillah" and "Demoncrusher" LOL
