First let me say this i like D3 i'm loving it, and having lots of fun, but i think everyone of us agrees that it lacks something. The people that played D2 know what i'm talking about.
D2 story was so great an intense and creepy that i almost always saw the cinematics and never skipped anything. And talked to everybody and saw everything even if it was the third time i saw it. D3 story is so childrish and lame, that makes me turn my volume down sometimes just to not hear those ridiculous lines that enemies/followers and npc's say.
Examples..
Cultist: "You are not gonna get us this time"
..
Diablo: "So you destroy my hellrifts, doesn't matter soon the heavens would be history" or something like that, don't quite remember...
wtf is this? demons taunting you? did when demons taunted? and say all those crappy lines? i hate this new generation of crappy 10 years old aimed story games..
This is Diablo... not "my little pony". Diablo would !@#$ing kill you before taunting the %^-* out of you!! diablo would simply throw more demons at you instead of taunting you!!
IMO "taunts" and other !@#$ should be removed from the game, it makes the game so silly and stupid. Specially when taunts come from demons and hell lords. The part when azmodan appears as a giant face and taunts you and then you read all his plans, actually made me laugh a bit.
Also graphics are not that great IMO. This is like DiabloWOW instead of Diablo3.
The only good thing i like about this game is the fast paced action hack/slash gameplay, everything else is a little !@#$y and poorly made.
I want a remake of D2 should be called D2 HD or something like that. Or better D2 history and ambient with D3 improved gameplay mechanics. That would be epic.
Don't get me wrong i'll still play all the characters and probably level up 2 or more till 60. But after that, i'll stop playing simple as that.
TL;DR : Diablo3 is a good hack and slash rpg game. That would entertain you for a while, but lacks replayability value and the story is boring, silly and lame.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, sure some things they say are dumb and cliche but still it was an awesome story. The story fits perfect with the lore of Diablo and it leaves the story open for multiple expansions. If they refined the smaller bits, which you can skip with the spacebar by the way, the game would be better but the main story components are still pretty good..

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
The story was not bad per-se, just some aspects of it. So many goddamn cliches and the absolute stupidity some characters displayed, killed a lot of the story for me. I remember the first time I killed Diablo in D2. Enter chaos sanctuary, press seals and bam..."Not even death can save you from me!". No fucking portrait taunting me with cheesy lines like "YOU WILL NEVAH DEFEAT MEHHHHH!!!" (sk, but you get the point).
Lately Blizzard is doing a great job at ruining their villains (see WoW, SC2 and D3).
At first i though it was just me. Now i'm pretty sure they have ridicolous bad taste for narrative for something like Diablo's and Azmodan's taunts to even reach the final version of the game.
Answering your question: they have bad taste. They must think saturday cartoons are good inspiration or something...
I enjoyed the story for what it was, and imo, always has been - a cheesy, over the top, action/horror story. Which is why I like the art style. It lets them do insane stuff without getting shut down by the censors (I'm pretty sure many of the game rating boards would have trouble with the death animations if characters looked more realistic. I heard Borderlands 2 had the same issue, and had to tone down death animations). Further, by doing the "cartoony" visuals, in 10 years it won't look like a washed out grainy mess like D1 and D2 does.
All that said, someone needs to tell Blizzard two things to a story A) Less is more (especially when a villian is trying to maintain a super powered alure) and C) Show not tell. I know that none of the Evils in D2 really showed their "power" (Diablo didn't do much to show he was the Evil of Terror, same with Mephisto, Andariel, or Duriel), but come on, it's not good strategy to tell your opponent the next week link in the chain of your plan.
Not that I really expected a master piece of Tolkien proportions though.
Classic... topic deleted from Blizzard forums apparently blizzard does not take well criticism
Actually Blizzard takes criticism. They deleted your thread because your thread name was in caps which is against their forum rules and they will delete each thread violating this rule without exceptions.
Yeah, it's surprising how many people can't understand simple rules like that in forums. I think anytime something like this happens to a person, their computer should slap them in the face. That'd teach people to read forum rules.
TL;DR : Diablo3 is a good hack and slash rpg game. That would entertain you for a while, but lacks replayability value and the story is boring, silly and lame.
That's your opinion, thankfully it doesn't mean anything. If you don't like the story and you fail to see that the replay-ability is equal to D2 then quit.
Judging by the use of all caps I can safely assume are incapable of logical dialogue and probably can't form any sort of decent opinion on anything.
Didn't read.
Also noticed a comparison to WoW. Let me make this short, OP you are an idiot, plain and simple. Please do NOT produce children, we don't need your DNA spreading; If you already have mated and spored, then may god have mercy on us all.
Fair opinion that very quickly turned into a loose rant, I thought the story was enough and not overly saturated at all, it was palatable and that's enough, besides, that's not why I enjoy Diablo anyway. Remember, you have aged a few years since D2, maybe you're just trying to like something that you clearly don't truly enjoy as much as you used to anymore?
The core story is good. It's actually much more developed than Diablo 2.
That said, the dialogue that they used in some areas (taunting, etc) is awful. It was almost like they were purposefully dumbing down what could have been a complex story by writing specific sections of dialogue for fourth graders.
I hate people who say this, so I'll say it quickly: I think it was probably an attempt to cater to a more general demographic where that kind of stereotypical storytelling is the norm (the same general demographic that watches the same five terribly cliche crime dramas every year).
Your all caps topic drew my attention to this stupid thread. I'm sure your playing this game now.
i'm not, and did you read my post at all?
"First let me say this i like D3 i'm loving it, and having lots of fun"
So STFU, before making an opinion try to be more informed.
Lord of terror, he instills fear in you. Consistently telling you that all is lost is a great way to demoralize.
They probably deleted the thread because of caps and you not being constructive, basically I read your post and found no actually facts, just biased opinions. Caps and non-constructive means delete.
I wouldn't say they messed up the story; nothing in the story had enough of a lasting impact. I mean, sure, the premise was cool, but things felt too convenient for both the protagonist and antagonist to make a convincing enough story, especially the stuff concerning the black soulstone. That part just felt too trivial and made up.
Aside from that, I can't really complain about the story. I wish there was more involving the lesser evils but I don't have any other gripes.

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
Honestly I agree with you. I feel like Diablo would have floored everyone a lot better if they had made a better story experience/atmosphere. This one just instantly removes you from the moment with its over-childishness, lack of characters with clear goals and emotions, and lack of decent dialogue/acting.
The cinematics themselves weren't bad, just the in-game stuff killed it.
What's weird is Blizzard is comprised of university educated people (and probably several who have taken writing classes), and what we got in this case was a ton of writing 'no-no's. Maybe the suits forced them?
The story is fine overall if you sum it up. It's the way they present it like the OP mentions - all the taunting and childish mocking - this is what is messed up.
P.S. "My people have been lost. Scattered to the winds. But I will survive, as long as YOU buy something" - Am I the only one wishing this guy follows his people in a most brutal and gory way after listening to this a thousand times?
As someone who read the the books, I was hoping for something a little more epic.
And while I appreciate the plot twists Blizz through in, they forshadowed a little to much.
But honestly, my biggest qualm, the choice of what got cinimatic treatment and what was just a cutscene.
I felt the scene in Deckard's house and the scene at the end of act 3 could have been a whole lot better in cinematic format.

It was deleted because you probably used all caps, and judging by the fact that you make a point worse than a Kardashian keeps a boyfriend.

The game is rated M. They could have made the dialogue much more dark, but they kept it a T level :/
And while I appreciate the plot twists Blizz through in, they forshadowed a little to much.
But honestly, my biggest qualm, the choice of what got cinimatic treatment and what was just a cutscene.

that is like going to a photography exhibition for the music
You didn't like the story, fine, good for you. I and many others did like it, so stating your opinion on the story as fact is obviously flawed.
