In the poll on the official forums, the Witch Doctor came out as a clear loser. What's the reason for this? When I played him in the beta, it was actually one of the two characters I enjoyed the most. Would this just be an impression by people who haven't played the beta yet?
The reason I like him atm, is because of him throwing jar of spiders, Crotch Frogs. lol I think it is just the way his skill looks that makes me find this class entertaining.
I don't really agree with the pets theory though, he's quite different from the standard summoning necro. For one, you start with a decent ranged skill. Also, the spiders etc aren't really pets, more like an AOE spell. I actually found him to be one of the more diverse characters, even in the first levels. The pets keep monsters at a distance while you use spells on them.
Most likely pets. Feels uncomfortable to manage them, i know when i first got those wild dogs in beta i instantly dismissed them because they were pulling everything
Also the character itself is quite weak, he has to rely on his pets to be powerful which for many of us isn't attractive.
PS: in beta you actually get a bad impression of WD because he kinda sucks until lvl 8-10.
up to +975INT which is +damage and +.1%resist..
so +97.5% resist..
+100%armor...
two of the best CCs in the game and a retreat with Spirit Walk..
+20% damage... +30% to mana cost which is negated by a 30% mana refund
+20% damage from Paranoia
and an HP regen!
think you could easily get to a 2000%wd total on spirit barrage
As someone said, WD may be underrated due to it being a new and unfamiliar class. I have to admit, the class didn't seem appealing to me at all when I first learned about the class. But after seeing the WD in action, I'll definitely plan on playing this class now. Summoning pets seems very appealing now and has caught my interest.
Wizard is still my main choice, but I'll split time to play both and see how it works out. Cause at this point, it's only beta so we don't know how any class will be like until all the skills are unlocked.
I think it was a pre-beta poll and like most I thought wow that class is going to be lame. Once I played it, totally different story will be #1 or 2, grasp of the dead made me fall in love instantly. It's the only character in beta that I need more than 4 dedicated slots so far, much more interesting that anything else.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
Probably resistance will scale with level. As on level 20 you might be having 20 resistance, but with the same amount of int you'd be stuck at 60 with nothing. Wouldn't make sense otherwise. Wizard and Witch doctor not caring about aoe and spells? Seems questionable to me.
seems fine to me as they will be short on armor compared to the other classes..
gives them some buffer from the ranged spells at least..
hypothetically though that makes the build even more viable then.. as I'm sure your pets' resists would do the same or that would be unbalanced.. and you'll have no way of improving that..
a pack of one aoe shot dogs aren't going to be much of a barrier end game..
I've seen posts that the AI in inferno mode will try to avoid your pets and go straight for the WD, it might be all theory but it would make things interesting.

I think in the harder difficulties, we'll have to focus on less pets and more direct damage/CC. Just like how the monk will have to focus more on healing than all out dps.
its VERY simple. after seeing so many people bash on him saying hes "weak" "boring" ect. when he is the polar opposite is because people simply do NOT know how to use him properly. hes clearly the hardest class to learn how to get his spells to flow together but once you figure him out hes the best by far with his amazing utility and still great damage.
so just dont listen to people who have no idea what they are talking about.

"once the pretty hardcore gamers we had testing inferno found it fairly difficult, we then we doubled it" -trolololol jay wilson
It's also not including a breakdown for Hardcore toons. In D2, the Necro skelemancer was THE HC toon to have. If you saw your guys getting mowed down by a MSLE or a hard hitting opponent, you backed off, got more minions and went back. The minions serve as an early warning system.
I haven't played the Witc Doctor yet, I've only played Barb and DH, of which the latter I like the most
But yah maybe it's because they nerfed him in patch 13 and 3 or 4 pets is kind of lame to manage and you may have more of an inclination to sit too far back from the action.
I can't wait for the Necro, I want some more evil shite

"So you have come here for information? I have some for you..."
The poll is people somewhat blindly choosing their favorite with most people not having even played them in the very limited beta. No one voted with any real experience with the actual play of the classes. Thus its not surprising to find the African tribesman themed class didnt score as well as a demon hunter, wizard, etc. It likely had the most to do with this rather than any sort of perceived weakness of the class itself.
Personally I like to roleplay a bit as I play, and roleplaying as an old black guy who says things like "ugada boogada!" when he casts his spells isn't very conducive to the style I'm looking to play as. As such, I'll prob level a WD secondly after a DH or Wiz. Despite me not really agreeing with the aesthetics and theme of the class, warlock style classes are my specialty and I love the abilities and passives of the WD more than any other class- I just dont want to be an old crazy African tribe dude for my main.
Actually I think the WD does have a precedent in blizzard games: Warcraft 3 witch doctor has a very similar appearance (and the same name). http://classic.battle.net/war3/orc/units/witchdoctor.shtml . Also, warcraft trolls in general have alwas had the voodoo feel, even the berserkers in Warcraft II.
So he doesn't totally come out of the blue, even in a Diablo game. Just think of the inhabitants of the Kurast jungle. Also, the Necromancer was rather thin and old, or at least didn't have the most vigorous appearance. Also, the paladin in D2 was black. But maybe you are right, and it's all these elements together that throw off the average gamer.

African tribal motif, which is not appealing to western players.
A:
All my joking aside, I think it's mostly because he's one of the new classes and a type that people aren't used to seeing nor playing.
who says he needs pets? ever played an Affliction lock?

I suspect WD's will be popular for Hardcore.

The guy who gave out the curse in "Thinner" or Dhalsim from Street Fighter. Yea... that's all I got :-P
