I have only beaten D2 once through Hell on SP. It was with a hammerdin. And while I am glad I have accomplished this task, I would like to do it with a different class. I was thinking about a wind druid because of the dual element synergies or a poison necro since most monsters are not poison immune. However, before I put the time into a character, I was wondering if any of you guys had any suggestions on builds that work on SP through Hell.
more viable than a windy because it doesnt rely on phys damage. i think the build allows for a grizz that can hit for ~7k and volcano/fissure/arma to deal more dmg.
A Bonemancer is really easy to solo Hell with. Since it's all magic damage, there are very few immunities you have to deal with, and those that do pop up are very simple to take care of using curses and your merc (get Dim Vision. Best curse ever.) If you pick up Revive, you'll have some nice extra damage sponges to help you out. Best of all, this build isn't particularly gear-dependent, so it's nice for SP. The only thing you really need is an Insight polearm on your merc (Bone spells cost a lot of mana), but the runes for Insight are really easy to find, so it's not a hinderance.
I haven't personally done this build in SP, but it was my first character after the ladder reset, and I went through the game solo for the most part, so I can definitely vouch for its effectiveness in that regard. GL.
Seems really fun but very gear dependent. Also, having the grizzly being the only physical dmg scares me.
you can easily replace the items with more common ones. and volcano/arma/boulder all have phys dmg as well.
I'll probably give it a try and thanks to respec and can change if it's not working thanks.
@kickin - I'll probably try that one next. Does it work well if I mix in some poison or should I go straight bone?
I don't know, I've never tried adding poison to the mix. It doesn't seem like it would be a good idea, because you'll have to take points out of your bone synergies to pick up the poison skills in the first place, which would reduce your bone skills' damage, and you won't have many points to boost up the poison synergies either, so you'll just end up with 2 mediocre elements. I'd definitely just go straight bone, as those synergies also increase your survivability via Bone Armor.
Yeah, it's not bad to level with; it can be a little hairy until you get an Insight (req. lvl27) on your merc, but after that it's a breeze. Just keep plenty of mana pots on you and you should be good to go.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

I want to beat it "legit" and I consider using plugy "cheating". I am really trying to beat the game as intended on the hardest difficulty as my own personal challenge. I have done it with a hammerdin but even that felt like cheating to me. So, I don't want to use plugy.
Siaynoq's Playthroughs
This was written awhile ago, so I think even today I might do a few things different with the build.

Also, is it a good build to level with or should I go summon first and then respec to bone around 40?

but w/o insight any caster char is going to get really annoying to use.
