This is dissapointing to me, I was never a big fan of starcraft or warcraft, however I loved Diablo. I will admit their success, and the fact that I am in the minority on the matter, but I have my opinion.
Although from a business perspective this move makes sense. Obviously, the smart move would be to make the next Diablo game an MMORPG (it would almost have to be in order to garner significant presence in the market), especially since the most successful games are moving in that direction. However, since Blizzard has had so much success with World of Warcraft (the online cartoon), I doubt that Blizzard would jeopardize that success by releasing a Diablo MMORPG. Large portions of WOW's subscribers, would most definetly move to a Diablo MMORPG.
Creating a Diablo MMORPG at this time doesn't make much sense for Blizzard. Therefore, I doubt we will see it for quite some time to come. A couple more years at least.
Now, on the other hand they could release another single player game, with multiplayer capability, just like Diablo 2. However, I find this type of game outmoded. There are only so many levels you can play, and the majority of the game-play is incredibly repetative. But this type of game could stand outside of WOW. Although, since they recently announced Starcraft 2, this option doesn't make much sense either.
It looks like us Diablo fans will have to wait several more years for a new Diablo title. Frankly, this seriously irritates me, since it's been 7 years since Diablo 2 was released.
It may have been seven years, but SC fans waited a bit longer still for an announcement for a sequel.
I doubt whether it's a smart move to make D3 a MMORPG. Regardless of WoW's success or the claim that many WoW fans would 'move' to Diablo. From what I've seen on this site, there's a whole host of D3 fans who don't seem to be as faithul WoW followers as they are D3. Plus, WoW fans won't just leave WoW altogether and join the Diablo MMORPG community. My opinion anyway.
I kinda get the feeling you're trying to say that the whole MMORPG thing is killing the single-player appeal? My opinion is that a single-player D3 (with the multiplayer option D2 had) won't see a 'decrease' in popularity, just because the market is supposedly moving towards a MMORPG flavor.

Rehashing the exact same concept as in D2 again is doomed to fail, yes. But no concept will even be entirely outdated, all it requires is to get a certain level of innovation into it and make it all works. Hellgate uses the same base concept as Diablo did, but is expanding on it and making it, well, better. I think Hellgaet will be a success, and if so, it will essentially be a game like Diablo in the next step of its evolution.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Because Diablo is a game where clicking your mouse isnt the important factor for liking the game (i dont know anyone who just likes to click on a mouse button or any other button, just for the sake of it)
Its what lies underneath it thats important
Now that you say it, I could apply the same line of reasoning to most games
"Why the heck do I like Starcraft? All I do is left-click and right-click (sure, hotkeys, but you can do everything with the mouse)."
"Why the heck do I like World of Warcraft? All I do is left-click and right-click (sure, hotkeys, but you can do everything with the mouse)."

I dont really get the feeling of that Blizzard has put THAT much amount of energy and work into StarCraft 2 as I feel they would have if it was the only news they were releasing in a short period of time...
Short period being... maybe well see D3 @ BlizzCon, or maybe next year.
And another thing.. why didn't they announce it @ BlizzCon? So that the world would see that their own show thingie is worth coming to. (Not that they won't come anyway...)

It might be something as simple as wishing to do it for the Koreans. 9 years of immensive support would warrant some form of bonus I'd say.

You know what is also annoying? you forget you're pressing the alt key after a while and want to see/remove the map... what do you get? Alt+Tab... GREAT!, there goes the loot...

lol. I've had that a few times too. But my thumb usually just rests on the alt key to press when I need to, and my other fingers do the potion-drinking
I played Diablo 2 LoD with a friend (multiplayer on TCP/IP) and when I hit the win key I'm like "oh shit! cover my ass! cover my ASS!", cos usually when I get back in the game, about three or four seconds pass during which, usually, I get slaughtered Not to mention the laaaaaaaag. For two or three seconds my character runs at the speed of light.
i saw them on mtv.com and under games theres videos and story's of them opening starcraft2 in tokyo or somewhere like that
but still starcraft was a kickass game.

It's actually hard to imagine that in the number of patches released for the game, they would not have listened more to the feedback from players and create a feature where the alt screen can be held down automatically.

Taking note on who to bitch to if I arrive at BlizzCon and don't get greeted with 40-foot tall Diablo 3 cardboard cutouts.
