Quote fromI'm gonna guess a generic "Ranger" class because we've already had Rogue/Amazon/Druid and they need a ranged fighter and a nature-magic user, and "Ranger" covers both of those. Actually, I have a theory they're gonna have 6 classes in the game because at this point the game is mostly likely not coming out until 2011, which gives them more time, and I'm sure they have too many ideas to fit into 5 classes.
They are probably going to have 7 classes, like last time, with two being part of the expansion.
There's no reason for the monk to not be the range character.
He could fill the holy/range part just fine.

And when the Barbarian raises his axe for a killing blow, he's vulnerable to a gut or side shot.
If he's wearing armour, he's only that much slower.

Trust me, in skilled hands, a bo staff is very much like a lasso. You can tie up somebody's legs with a bo.
It wouldn't keep them down, no entanglements can because their only meant to delay to allow either escape or another move while the opponent is distracted.

However, there should be a level where it's very difficult at the best of times.

You can not only hit things, but use it to block weapon hits, as well as trip up your opponent.
A barbarian who's all tangled up in a staff ain't going to be much good with most of his weapons.
The pen is mightier than the sword.
If a monk, or similar character doesn't make it to D3, it's probably not due to Blizzard having not tried, but it didn't work, whether it be due to a lack of a quality tree or otherwise.

Quit making fun of the monk.
The third tree would be breathing exercises.l

I will, if you can show me when a demon from Hell has ever walked the face of the earth.:P
It's a game and it isn't meant to be a perfect replication of history. A monk is a useful representation of an unarmed fighter.

I have so little spare time in my life that if I could only play it on the net, I just simply wouldn't make the time to play it ever.
I have about 2 hours a month to play games and, even free, it wouldn't be worth my time to play on battlenet.

But I can say with the utmost confidence because it's not out yet, that it doesn't suck.

Who cares about money? It's not as though you can take the gold and go down to the local 7-11 and spend it.
The whole object is to beat Diablo and whoever else might be the final boss, not to accumulate virtual gold. At least that's my goal.
There are ways to compensate so the monk doesn't get too powerful in relation to other characters. The fact that he's armorless makes him more of a challenge compared with other characters, he'd have to be played smarter to survive in some cases.
Considering that he'd be more dependent on players making good choices in regards to skills, then lucking out and finding uncommon or rare pieces of armour, it can actually be more of a challenge this way.

I know that Eastern monks really know how to use swords, polearms, etc. However, to put that into the game only makes them a variation of a fighter character. Then it becomes, "Why bother." Give the weapons to a fighter character.
However, many of us would like to have an un-armed, un-armoured character, who through skills and toughness goes through the game and succeeds. That's one of the characters I'd like. It'd be slower progress, because he's weapon restricted, but he also wouldn't be dependent on gold to get by, other then for healing potions and mana potions, so that's a plus.
But most people, when you ask them for an example of an unarmed character, the monk is the name that is usually given, so it's a useful representation. Blame Dragonball and other anime if you want, but that's the reality.

That doesn't bother me. If people want to be lazy and not get the full experience of the game, let them. It's really their loss. Most of those people probably get bored and leave sooner anyway, which means that those who are committed and play the game stick around, which is how it should be.
I'm not one to leech xp and I've always played by myself, because I don't have time to multiplayer.

Western Monks were more concerned about acquiring knowledge moreso than Eastern Monks.
Also, Westen monks were representatives of the powers that be at the time, so there was no need to learn physical defense skills, whereas the Easten monks were basically enemies of the powers that be in their territories.
I've never played Diablo to gain virtual gold. I've always managed to acquire what I need in time and in the wilderness, so that's not my focus.
The character class doesn't have to be calledm "Monk" as long as the character type is there. I'd prefer the class to have no weapons or armour. Let the special effects be shown through a well-placed kick or hit.
