Are you sure both drop? Last I heard, only unattuned runes dropped. When did that change? Can someone link to a blue?
I'd be really glad if both dropped, like the OP said, it's the best of both worlds.
I was also under the impression that only unattuned runes dropped, that was from the interview with Jay Wilson back in august 1st, maybe i misunderstood it but i don't think i did.
The bottom line is that what we heard from Jay was just an idea at that point. It likely changed before it was implemented, and will change many times again before release. We'll have to wait for something official before nerdraging.
The idea is that regular runes won't provide any affix, just do what we've seen so far. But unattuned runes will provide something a little extra. So if plain runes never dropped, what would the need for bonuses on unattuned really be?

You can bet both will be present.
The need for the bonus would be the same as it would be no matter what system they use. People will want more stat bonuses. I don't think stats being on unattuned runes is a way to gauge whether regular runes are still around or not. Maybe I misunderstood your meaning.
Anyways, it's nice to know that everyone agrees this is the best way to do it though, people may get angry at Blizzard for things here and there but they are pretty damn smart so hopefully they realized this like we all have and they do it.
Someone needs to pass this on to Jay just in case this simple, elegant solution has slipped by the D3 team somehow lol.
I'll save my unattuned rune hate/rage for after release. But, after release and I have first hand experience with my hate for it then, I will rage a bit.

I'd rather bitch about it now and be part of a movement against it so hopefully there is lesser chance of seeing it during release, not that my posts would look like this. I've already stated my opinions abroad about it so I won't repeat them. I think the idea of having both types of runes is a good idea, not sure if I've chimed in on that or not. I think that'd appease nearly everyone, which is always a win.
I think this concept is a POS. I have no problem with runes being locked to skills, but you should beable to know what the rune is, before placing it into a skill, it shouldn't be a gamble.
Blizzard WTF are you doing, by all means fire the moron who thought this would be a good idea.
Sigh, just to find out we got a crappy rune, we need to socket it, on top of that, I think It's pretty safe to assume, we can't sell said crappy rune once it got socketed.

The whole concept of Diablo is about gambling. Every barrel you break is a gamble, every time you kill a boss in D2 was a gamble. If you do socket a rune and find that its not what you want, I'm 99% sure that you can unsocket it and try for another rune. Its not any different than finding a useless magical item.
Get over yourself. This will actually make finding the Rune you want all the more of an achievement. How many at level 60 will be able to say that they have all the runes they want? And I'm for this change as it will ensure the long term end game life of D3, essentially promising that the end game is viable.

Don't the original runes still have the potential drop? I like the idea of un-attuned runes, it allows our skills and character to actually have some personal identity. Blizzard is giving us our customisation back and its what we all wanted to have. Having the additional bonus of dropping the original runes just makes this even better! =)

What planet are you from, Diablo is about randomization, not gable(they aren't the same thing).
If you used an identify scroll on a piece of equipment, and then said equipment became bound to that char, then it would be = to this POS Attuned rune system(but it Isn't so don't you dare try to say that's how Diabo is, infact none of the Diablo games try pulling this BS).
You want to... build your characters randomly is that what I'm hearing? From those who just want the skill attuned runes? If diablo 3 turns into that count me out. You might as well play a game of blackjack and just save years of time in the process.

Yea this is BS, first they remove adjustable stats, and now they are making the only aspect left that allows you to customize your char, into a gamble.
Hell with this crappy system, there won't even be a market for runes, because its attributes are hidden until placed into a skill.
I'm starting to wonder why is this game gonna be online only, when the systems it uses is more single player oriented.

Newsflash for the math challenged! Randomization = Gambling
Bound to a character? NO ONE HAS CONFIRMED THAT RUNES ONCE PLACED IN A SKILL CANNOT BE REMOVED. And as I said before there is a 99% probability that we will be able to remove runes once placed in a skill.
Blizzard entire direction and reason for unattuned runes almost guarantees this. They want you to play the game but not roll countless level 1 characters because you screwed up your runes. And if that 1% chance of you being right comes through, I'll be adding my voice to the righteous fury. Till then... Chill.
I'm really hoping that with unattuned runes you have two options, one is simply to socket a skill and see what the randomizer does for you. And the mystic also had the ability to craft an unattuned rune into a rune of your choosing, with maybe worse random stats, or a pricey crafting recipe for a lvl 7 rune.

Randomization Isn't the same thing as gamble, and you are clueless if you think runes are gonna be removeable/not bound to chat or skill.
When you pick up a random piece of equipment you don't want, you can always sell/trade it for what you do want, this clearly wont be the case with runes or they would've made them so you can use a scroll to identify them, not need to lock it to a skill to see what the POS does.

Sorry, but Jay Wilson have SAID that runes are removeable in an interview from august 1.
check 2:52... he specifically says runes are removeable, and that there are more than likely to instate an option to remove rune effect from the mystic.. later in the interview
You come off as ignorant on this board, i'm sorry, but it's true.
Removeable, doesn't mean you can sell them, not like anyone could even if they were allowed to, because they are tied to very specific skills.
At most you'll beable to remove they, just to be allowed to gamble other runes in the same skill, with needing to destroy runes, still doesn't change the fact you have no idea what the rune does until It's placed into a skill, but onced placed into a skill, it becomes locked to that skill, so even if you can switch it out at will, that rune will only be usable in said skill.
I can see it now, people will be getting/wasting(as it gets locked to a specific skill) a dozen or so runes, before they actually get the one they want.
All because some moron doesn't think we should be allowed to know what we are equiping(good thing the rest of the game doesn't work backwards like that).

Here's Jay Wilson's quote from MONTHS ago: "You can still remove that rune, at any time, but it is now attuned."
Dude, you just got freaking owned. Your arguments did not, and still do not, hold water. Just bow out of this conversation with what little grace you have left, because you are clearly uninformed, and your contributions are more or less trolling at this point.

I have not read all the posts, but wanted to weigh in on this.
I actually think it is a pretty good idea, albeit quite frustrating, but it lends itself to greater re-playability. I know some people are using the skill calc and have these great ideas on builds, but for me and many other fans of the Diablo series I'm sure, the randomness of the runes creates a greater sense of "accomplishing" your build as you just lucked out or bought out the best rune for your skill. I mean I honestly do think the AH will provide people the ability to get the runes they want as there will be TONS of players and they all wont be built the same way, so you can bet there will be quite an array of runes in the AH IMO. I would really be all over this if they somehow implemented ways to either clear or reroll...methinks of TF2 when you have 2 crappy hats, smash them together and get random...maybe we can get unattuned runs in a similar fashion or just have to rely on good ol MF to solve the riddle.
Take it easy on me....long time lurker, finally starting to add my .02 to it all.

I completely agree! Blizzard has a really good system on their hands here. For people who simply hate the idea of gambling, they have the normal, predictable, crimson-alabaster runes. For people who really get off on the randomness of itemization in Diablo (most everyone I know), they get the same benefit from predictable runes, but also have the option to pop in unattuned runes to see what they do.
If they don't like the rune's effects or stats once they're attuned, no problem! JUST POP IT OUT LIKE JAY WILSON SAID and either sell it (if you can) or keep it for an alt. Perhaps that rune will be so weird it will give you an idea for an entirely new build for an alt! It's only going to help replay value for those people who find replay in randomization.

I take it as "lock on skill" but really these are just speculation.
2012 is far away, they can try a different approach or even remove runes at all.
Just look at gems.
