But 9 classes at the end of the second expansion just seems overkill, and I'm afraid their functions might overlap, which makes some classes more useful in a given functions than others.
Are we playing WoW or something? Who -cares-? LoD added 2 classes that added nothing to the roster except some variety. The druid is a worthless class but plenty of people play it, because its just fun to them and its different. But there was no "reason" to use them beyond fun.
There are TONS of unique ideas. Even for a Paladin like class, you could easily think about something else that isn't holy at all with swords and shields that has abilities centered around them. If they can't think of 2 distinctive new class per expansion then they need to hire more people to give them ideas, because they clearly don't have enough.
If there is, I just don't want ladder exclusive item or such crap. Trying to merge competition with a coop based game is a stupid idea to me in the first place, but if people want to compete its their choice: as long as it doesn't have more than the normal game.
I really don't like what raising the level cap is going to do to Inferno. All that time spent balancing the entire game for 60-capped characters with X gear, it has to be thrown out and redone entirely for every new cap. Or else you just leave it at 60 and everyone ignores it for the 70+ expansion areas. Just seems like a mess however you slice it.
On the other hand improving gear if not level is pretty much inevitable in Diablo expansions, so I don't see any way out of this.
This is an interesting thing. We know there are 3 tiers of equipment for Inferno mode (Like WOW's Item Tier system). If the level cap increases, all these items will be .... useless.
Options:
Level all 3 tier items to new max level cap
Add new items that are the new max level cap
Either options is a ton of work. And this worries me a lot. I'm hoping for an expansion at most 18 months after release.
Lets put another thing in perspective. If Normal brings you from level 1 to 20, add one act, and its not the same. Look, balance is screwed up already.
Lengthening the game, since it lengthens each difficulty separately as well, as a big impact on everything too.
The end result is no matter what you add, they would be better off rebalancing. How much useless crap was in D2 after all?

No, this is not WoW, so I'm not sure why you asked that.
Added nothing except variety? Isn't variety everything? Your statement is a contradiction of itself. And they added a lot of variety at that. The Assassin added combo mechanics to the game as well as traps, two toatally unique gameplay systems to Diablo 2. It's a lot, two unique mechanics for one class. And you call the druid worthless, and yet it is the only shapeshifter class. That's why plenty of people play it, because it has a totally unique mechanic. You call it worthless, but then say it's fun and adds something different. I don't get that.
Alright, the whole thing you've got going, the whole rebel thing, I just don't understand it. I get it that your trying to stick it to Blizzard, oddly enough on a fansite, and that's kinda interesting, I guess, but ultimately pointless.
Anyway, I really hope they add a shield class, they are my favorite archetypes of all fantasy games. Also, another shapeshifter would be great, though something different from a druid. I'm just afraid 9 classes will have overlapping mechanics, but Blizzard can add as many unique classes as they want, those we have now look fun, and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
Lets put another thing in perspective. If Normal brings you from level 1 to 20, add one act, and its not the same. Look, balance is screwed up already.
Sub-Inferno balance doesn't have to be tuned so tightly because it's not built to be max challenging. It's also not the place most long-term players will spend most of their time. I'd really appreciate if Inferno was carefully tuned instead of throwing numbers everywhere (D2) with each gear progression (vanilla->LoD->1.10) And this isn't even getting in to how skill balance is a moving target when the character cap keeps changing.
Ultimately though I think Blizzard will go your route.
On another note, new types of skill runes would be a very cool way to expand existing characters without having to mess with the skill list. That is definitely something I would like to see.
In addition to the usual as expected of a Diablo expansions, I'd some additional randomized content for the previous acts. Maybe throw in some more random quests, just to keep the early game a bit fresher.
1. Bring in the Talisman and Charm system they removed.
2. 2 New Classes
3. New Act in Heaven
4. More Gems
5. Expanded Multiplayer (More Modes, dueling in world)
6. More co-op players (6 or 8 Max)
7. New Shop (Carpenter that links to the new Charm System)
Not to be a dick but I feel the need to shut down a couple options =D
There is already an act in heaven
Maybe more pvp modes I agree with, but I see them never putting in dueling in the world, as they have said that only creates a griefing atmosphere
They also said anything more than 4 players in co op creates a very messy on screen look
I do like the idea of two new classes, and something like the carpenter =P
First I heard about a Heaven Act. Anyone got a source link?
On topic: I agree with most of the things posted in the first comment. A new act, monsters, items but maybe most important of all a new class or two would be lovely in an expansion. I probably forgot a lot of important aspects that usually go in regular expansions here but whatever
Oh and if they add new classes for Diablo 3 in an expansion then maybe they should up the character limit a little bit? Because I think most people will actually have around 10 characters before an expansion is actually released and it would be a shame if you actually had to delete one of your characters or perhaps even worse buy another copy of Diablo 3 to actually be able to create any of the new classes
Yeah, I would have to agree there. More character slots would be much appreciated.
For a different approach, why not some UI changes for expansions. If they are going to keep the UI, primarily in the main screen, seen in the beta on release then I hope they apply some updates making it look more polished. =)
Ooooh... how about a different log in screen per expansion, kind of like WoW - yeah I went there!!! =)
Hmm, mainly the things you said, a couple new classes, increase level cap, new content, new items. But, I also want Charms & the Talisman to return in an expansion. Charms were my favorite item type in DII.
I don't think we'll see a raise in the level cap- It would essentially limit us to walking around the one (or two) new acts introduced in the expansion. The only way to get around this is to add in a new difficulty higher than Inferno in each expansion, but this seems like it would get out of hand quick.
1. 2 new classes. I've heard whispers (guesses) at 1 new class, but we've only got 5 classes as is - they're good classes admittedly, but I really want to see 2 classes per expansion to really round out the roster. By the time the expansion rolls around, I'm likely to have all five of the original classes at max level after all.
2. Expanded PvE content (especially endgame). Of course I'd like to see the main acts get expanded a bit (hopefully by adding stuff hinted at in the original game, nothing huge a dungeon here a quest there). More importantly though I'd love to see additional content added at end game. An endless dungeon mode with waves of enemies for example, perhaps a challenge mode where we have to beat bosses or areas with certain stipulations (no gear / speed runs / kill the boss without killing any trash).
3. One of the following two things:
-An additional Rune type, bringing the total types of rune up to six.
OR
-Several additional skills added for each class (bringing the total skills per each class up to 28-32).
4. Expanded PvP options (without bringing back the grief fest that was Diablo 2).
I came across this quote and with what i saw at blizzcon i think Diablo 3 is just the beginning of big things to come. First off the WOW announcement with Panda's lol . My god i thought that was a joke and how did Chris keep a straight face. Also Chris was on the Diablo 3 lore panel. Has he been on Diablo panels before ? Also i came across this Jay statment from a interview with 1 up after Diablo 3 was first announced.
"We're not saying this is the end of the Diablo universe, but we are trying to bring this storyline to a close. It's not just Diablo III -- we've got plans beyond."
Its just not Diablo 3 they have plans for. This is the part that gets me thinking something more is coming. I want to see Blizzcon 2012 or 13 now lol. At least well have the game to keep us content until we know the answer to this.
And I don't think he is speaking of expansions here. I think something else is brewing. Look at D2 and D2LOD. It is still D2 just LOD.
I haven't read the whole post so I might say things twice. Also the first part of the following I wrote like 2 hours ago, so I'm just gonna ctrl+c it and edit some.
One thing I do want from expansions, it's prolly to much to ask, but blizz must make the outdoor environments' outline non-static. Big task I know, but on the other hand, it shouldn't be nearly as random as dungeons (It can, but would be shitloads of work).
Where dungeons have, for arguments sake, 100 different rooms/areas-pieces in total, each dungeon consisting of about 10-15 of these random pieces.
The outdoor layout on the other hand, can't be done this way: Each Act/area have different environments, thus, each must have own separate pieces. Acts/areas can maybe have 10-15 different area-pieces max resulting in 40-60 different area-pieces in total for the whole game's outdoors.
Even this little randomization can make a worlds difference. I just feel when you're playing through the game for the 100th time, you'll most certainly know the exact outline of each Act, regardless of all the random events taking place within the outline.

I've heard of a Diablo mmo in the works that would resemble WOW. That's the only thing I can think of besides D3 expansions.
I think that D3 expansions will allow us to get to lvl 99 or 100. They will add atleast 1 more act but I'm guessing 1 per expansion. They will add atleast 2 more classes but there could easily be more. Of course, there will be new items, & probably the charm system. Lastily, they might make a pvp system that is ranked similar to WOW. There is so much blizzard could add to D3 that we'll just have to wait & see to find out.
I think they said in the first expansion they will add a class that has "never been done before". So it's hard to say exactly what kind of class they will be adding to the mix, but I've been hoping for a druid like class.
Nice idea for a topic.I was thinking of how the lore would progress in Diablo 3 and here`s an idea guys:
What if Diablo actually wins this time? And the humans and Azmodan loose the battle, but not the war.I think that would make for a great story line.Save the last fight with Diablo in the second expansion(yes i want at least 2)
Definitely an interesting idea, I wouldn't mind seeing something like this play out, with more details of course. =)

I agree, making the outside environments more random would be a good addition, and yes, quite difficult to do. It would also be good to increase the size of them... only going from what the beta has to offer, I'm not to fond of the size of the outside areas, there not big enough. Though, I'm sure they do get much larger as you get further into the game (at least I would hope so).
