Because they troll the internet? It's fun for them? 4chan told them to do it?
People who have a bone to pick are the most vocal. People who are generally content don't usually go out of their way.
So now we're resorting to conspiracies. How about if I said that all the positive reviews are just fanboys in denial and blizzard employees? See, how easy it is to turn that conspiracy crap around? Stop making excuses. The disappointment in this game is pretty evident everywhere you look: Critic sites(user reviews), Fans sites(like this one), Official forums.
People that are going out of their way to post criticism are the ones that actually care/cared for the franchise like me. If you keep silent, blizzard will continue fucking up and in turn earn money because of passive fanboys like you.
Nothing Blizzard could've done would've pleased you, or the majority of the people hating on the game. They pretty much made up their minds long ago.
Just do me a favor, read some of those reviews right now. They're mostly about the game being boring, no offline, bugs etc not server crashes. I'm hearing servers are mostly stable right now.
I've made up my mind after clocking in 65 hours, I wanted to enjoy the game, I tried my best because I waited so long for it. And I couldn't take it anymore. I even gave it for a try to my older brother(he's 28 now) who is a Diablo fan since 1996 whom I watched kill Diablo for the first time when I was a kid. He was starring at the screen with a facial expression of, 'meh' and annoyance, and he said, 'fuck this, let's watch the stanley cup'. It is just a generic RPG, nothing special about it.

Sure, there are some like that NOW, but the vast majority of the 0's came from the release night, and the server instability. If you find it boring, fine, whatever. Just don't try and make it seem like it's everyone's opinion, because it sure as hell isn't.

Look at the most recent ones, of today, they still outnumber the positive by a huge margin.
It's not just my opnion. It is an opinion that is shared by a vocal majority. That says something.
It is also interesting to note that most reviews that are negative are actually stating their specific dislikes. Positive reviews are just 'I love this game yo, fuck all the haters, this game is the best, its awesome'. And you guys call us 6 year old whiny kids?

Just because it's the group speaking up the loudest, doesn't mean it's the majority. At all. People that are happy with the game have a lot less incentive to go to a metacritic page and rate it highly, than someone who hates it so much they just have to go smack a zero on it.

It is the vocal majority still. There is a considerable amount of reviews from users already, not just metacritic. And most are very critical of the game, some down right hopeless. For the given vocal spectrum it is the majority opinion.
'People that are happy with the game have a lot less incentive to go to a metacritic page and rate it highly, than someone who hates it so much they just have to go smack a zero on it.'- There is no way you can prove that, that is just an assumption. I mean, you're here and you just LOOOOOVE the game, shouldn't you be playing it? Yet the vocal majority is evident, it is proof enough.

I'm actually hunting for Bashiok in the Dahlgur Oasis right now, it's too late (in the night) for me to try Inferno Belial again. Either way, the people who hate it the most are the loudest, they're still not the majority.

Again, baseless assumptions. No wonder blizzard is becoming more and more incompetent. I'm done here.
LOL build diversity in Diablo 1
LOL PVP balance in Diablo 2
You know nothing, OP.
Excuse me boy? Here we go again, yet another fool who has no clue what he is talking about. Please do entertain me and inform me of how unbalanced D2 PvP was.
JUST because I'm slow, and easily confused, are you telling me you think D2's pvp was balanced?
Um yea. It like a chess match, certain pieces had advantages over other pieces, but any piece could beat any piece on any given day. Given the skill of the players matched up, now there were bad match ups and good match ups, like in any great game. Just because you or anyone else in here was bad at the game, doesn't mean the game isn't balanced. That is like me saying Street Fighter is the most unbalanced piece of crap because Zangief has a grab that goes quarter screen, or that Ryu can trade SRK to U1.
You're 100% retarded if you think D2 PVP was balanced in any way. Enigma and other retarded runewords post 1.10 patch just made things worse.
So cmon then. Enlighten me on how it was broken or unbalanced. All you got is enigma? Really? Id advise you go back to MFing, more fit for your tals sorc buddy.
How do you create pvp balance in a game where a lvl 99 can hostile a lvl 50? or in a game that's so gear dependent that if you took 2 players playing the exact same class with the exact same skills and stats and same skill level. The more geared player would win. How is that balanced?
I've seen this discussion hundreds of times on the wow forums and other mmo forums. The only balanced pvp is Pong or rock, paper, scissors. talking about balance in a game like D2 is wrong on so many levels. Don't try to argue that it was balanced because it never was no matter how you sugar coat it.
"It's not an baseless assumption. There are studies about unhappy customers being way way way more vocal about their problems with a product than happy customers. That's the reason companies try to not make customers that unhappy because else they will go to other potential customers and talk bad about the product. That's not an assumption, that's a proven fact and you will learn this in the first 2 months in university if you study some business related things.
PS: That's why blizzard even refunded people with more than 50 hours played, they don't want these customers to spread their bad thougths about the game."
Well.... DURRRR, ofc they will be more vocal and want their money back. Why would someone sit quiet and take it when he/she is upset and disappointed in the product? You don't even need a study for that. Still that doesn't mean that people that are not vocal are all enjoying the game, that is just a biased assumption. Some quit without caring of going on the forums. Like I brought up an example with my brother in previous page, he never visists the forums or anything. But he wasn't phased with the game, he wanted to ditch it.
The point here is the AMOUNT of the people upset and the general consistency of the issues cited WHY they're upset.

InfidelMan, you try so hard yet you fail even harder
But then again, it was fun watching you fail, LOL
I failed? Please, do tell.
I told you why your argument is invalid. If you don't want to acknowledge that, fine, but don't throw it around here anymore. I told you what the reasons behind this phenomenon are. But for you in a very short form: the people who are disappointed with the product are very likely to post negative feedback whereas the people happy with the product are not. It is known that you have to be very very happy about a product to post positive feedback. People just happy with the product (and these are normally the by far the biggest part of the customers) do very rarely post feedback on the product. That is the way human people act.
By saying "BUT THE AMOUNT" you don't achieve anything, because this is how people act. This is just a proven fact. You can't prove this false by saying "BUT THE AMOUNT OF NEGATIVE FEEDBACK".
Like I said, it is logical that it is the trend. You don't need studies for that. I was saying that the vocal majority, notice the keyword VOCAL, is not happy with the game. I never said that the majority of people are unhappy with, that would a huge assumption. You can't really prove or tell what exactly is on the peoples' minds, the ones that don't voice out. Some even said they still play it for the mere title of the game, even though they don't really like it. How long will that last?
You can argue forever about D3 about being the greatest ARPG to date, but it won't make any difference if the people you are talking to doesn't think the same thing.
I can respect your views on the rest of the subjects you touched on in your post, and some of the points you made, especially the linearity issue, were very valid, while other stuff is much too subjective to argue about. I like when someone can rationally and respectfully discuss a topic, without raging.
But I simply have to state that, to me, Diablo 3 really is the greatest ARPG to date, simply because of the fact that the genre failed to evolve over the decade since the last installment in the series that started it all in the first place. No other game after LOD risked anything at all, the companies just blatantly copied Blizzard and haven't innovated a bit, except for the little, less important things like the auto gold pickup feature that you've mentioned or the addition of pets/mules.
But there hasn't been an ARPG title that really tried to push the genre to a whole new level, and after ten years of little changes Blizzard as well decided to play it safe. They made the game faster, refined the well-known experience, simplified the itemization, and all in all have indeed improved upon D2.
The final product is far from perfect, but in that mess of boring, 'one playthrough' games that came before it, Diablo 3 still manages to rise above and hold the attention of the player for much longer than any of it's rivals, no matter how flawed it may be.
And that simply makes it the best game in a very stale and outdated genre that refuses to change.
