Its driving me nuts. Now that I got a kickass computer I thought "hey, lets start recording some good stuff".
But there are SO many things that just drain away so much of your time. How do people manage? Does anybody have any tips to make this radically less painful?
My main problems are converting and uploading.
Converting is a PAIN. Some conversion takes ages. Most don't reduce the size much either, which means I have to upload huge files to youtube which.. uh... uploads at prehistoric speed even if my connection can do it much faster.
Do all uploaders or LPers just waste hours of their time to put just a few videos online besides recording them? How can people handle this crap?
Youtube already forces that. 15 minutes top per video. But if anything, that makes the whole process more painful, not less :/
I'm more looking for tips in programs and such too. Stuff that people use that is quicker. And -free-. If there are such things. For example, I read its good to convert to h.264, but it takes way too long to convert with the only program I tried and I can't find any others (except programs at 40$ or above...)
Really? I see hour long videos all the time. The Thinking Atheist posts an hour plus every other week or so. OMFG posted a Lore4Noobs hour long episode for Thrall.
Maybe its the newer users that have to do 15 minutes at a time. Or perhaps your account is set up as a viewer and not a producer, or whatever it's called?
Yeah, I think its really old accounts that can do that or those that get money out of their youtube accounts. Its not everybody, anyway, that I know for sure.
Youtube partners have no time restraints on their accounts. Also, if you're lucky (like me) you can randomly be chosen to have ur 15 minute restriction removed.
As for rendering... the best choice is to have two computers / laptop or whatever. Record away on your computer, getting footage like a mad man... then transfer it all to the laptop, and edit the video. Hit render, and go back to recording more footage while it renders / uploads to youtube. then repeat.
Right now just using FRAPS to put my microphone straight on the video, the downside is less customization there but at least when I record with that and mumble it hears everything that's being said. I use a program called AsfBinWin for simple cuts of video files, and I usually just use Windows Movie Maker to put all my pieces together + my title and overlay. It's a pain if only because of how long it takes to put it together only to split it up again for Youtube, but I don't mind so much. :3 And uploading to Youtube can suck, but I usually put all three or four on queue and upload it while I'm asleep.

sux how i have download and upload limits... fuken money leeching ass corp rogers and bell... they expect me to poop with gold coins and diamonds... I PAY FOR SPEED NOT FOR FUKEN DOWNLOAD LIMIT...
anyway hating aside, if u uploading 240p will apoear first then 360 all the way to 1080 if u have that res... so u can choose to pause and do it later
You should see what I used to go through to make COD montages... I had to sift through hours of footage, and almost every scene has slow motion in it (on sniping montages). I look forward to making some D3 videos, but for PvM, I don't know how exiting it would be... and you really wouldn't edit anything out.. We'll see.. I definitely plan for PvP videos.
As for time.. encoding and uploading doesn't take that long... and you can do it while you are sleeping or afk...

I wish either FRAPS would record Dosbox or Hypercam was better at capturing sound.

Hah! Uploading for anything higher than 360p is crazy! It would take an hour per videos, and it would drain way too much out of my download/upload limit too. I have a limit of 150 GB and thats the highest I can go (we pay a fortune for that shit), I'm not going to spend 1.5 GB per video...

True enough.
EDIT: To piss me off further... well, lets clarify: I don't use mics, I hate mics, I only add annotations to my videos as a mean to communicate. But hey, how does that work out? Like shit of course. 80% of my annotations don't show up. I -love- youtube, don't I.

The thing is, it has to be triple buffered or higher to use FRAPS. Of course, I don't know how that's done with Dosbox, but that's how I did it with ZSNES.

Yeah, I'd use Windows Movie Maker to do that with overlays... it would probably be tons easier. Although it would probably take more time (converting / making the video file, not actually using), at least that wouldn't be time using Youtube's atrocious annotations system.

Anyway. I'm giving up on this. Frankly, its way too much hassle for an audience I don't have.
