If you downloaded during the weekend you may not have gotten the sound files. I had to redownload because I didn't. In any case it a was a free weekend for Alpha because of the server going down.
Minecraft got way too popular for this humble server. I've had to disable everything fancy to even get it to run. It went down on Saturday, September 18.
It will probably go back to normal on Tuesday, September 21. I hope.
If your launcher is giving you download errors, please update the launcher by downloading the latest version from this page.
The following things do not work at the moment:
* Registering an account
* Purchasing the game
* User verification for online servers
* Sounds and music for new players
The following does work:
* Actually playing the game
* Player skins
Until this all gets sorted out, I'm officially calling a "free-to-play weekend", or however long this will take to fix. You will need to have a paid account to play it later on when this gets fixed though.
If you want to keep track of the latest developments, please follow my blog. I also post stuff on my twitter, but there's a lot of nonsense there as well.

I built a little shelter into the side of a mountain, then I built a little building at the bottom of the mountain, then I built a cover for the steps from the side of the mountain to the bottom, then I build a wall around the shelter. So, at my mountain shelter I have four walls of varying depth protecting me. I plan on making some traps soon as well.
I do hate creepers though, things can blow up my work in seconds. Whenever I see them I go off and try to kill them asap, bows preferably but a hit and run sword attack works too.
I love this free to play weekend.
(Edit: Oh, and I also made a moat in front of the wall and a moat behind the wall. )
And LinkX you can nowadays just make a money transfer from your bank account to your paypal account. Have you tried that? I do it that way and I don't have to mess around with credit cards and stuff.
You can outrun creepers, and you can also lead them away. They only time they'll explode is when they feel they will get you, so run away from your built stuff and kite them with a sword or bow. They will go down eventually, just watch out for that beep when he's going to explode. That way he'll explode no where near your stuff, and you'll get some free mined stuff outta the ground.
Yeah, gold is only good as a decorative block, sadly. They used to be resistant to explosions but not anymore. U.U

Of course, but it can be a right pain in the ass to accrue it in large sums. It takes fifteen seconds to mine one block with a diamond pickaxe. That's a lump of time.

Iron armor works fine for me. Diamond pick. mmmm. Chews through anything.
I have the worst luck finding underground caves. I broke into one, then made that like a second base underground and branched off in multiple directions and never found anything else. Did find some ore, but no other caves.
I installed the game a couple of days ago, it's fun for a while but now I feel I already ran out of possibilities to explore :/
One weird thing though, this game is actually quite creepy. Yesterday late at night I was exploring a deep tunnel complex and I ran out of wood for torches, and I knew there was a monster spawn near, and I had no armor and just a stone sword. Those square zombies are so scary when you know they can be around any corner and knock the shit out of you.
Today I found a monster spawn and opened the two chests, that was pretty cool too.
Does anyone know how the boat works? I can just push it off shore :/
btw, turmobil, do you know where your avatar is from? I keep wondering, it's so funny.
Yea, I cannot turn off my computer. I have had the same minecraft game (On the main menu) going sense monday, for fear that I wouldn't be able to go back to my game. It sucks, because I don't want to loose it.
And what is this about online games? I heard the online ones were free.
Yeah what is Obsidian? I never quite knew. Can someone tell me?
Obsidian is the hardest material, but it's also useless. You can mine it but as far as I know you can do nothing with it. I know you can't make tools or armor. So for now it's just to make indestructible buildings with.
Another question: where can I find snow? Is there snow in every game, or does your game have to be loaded with a snowy tileset?
I'm trying to build a giant tower now on my artificial island just off the shore. It's pretty hard though, always the chance of falling off... and I already spend an entire forest in making ladders.
I'm not really sure about snow. I don't like it personally feel like I'm playing the game near Santa's workshop, so I reloaded the map until I got none.
If it IS in the game though you could probably make a compass and sail to try to find it, leaving markers if you can.
If you're playing the latest version you can hold shift to enter sneak mode i think it is, which wont let you fall off a legde.
I kept getting lost after going through caves, so I went to the top of my house and put a big 1x1 tower. I just took 64 dirt blocks and pointed the pointer downward and I jumped and when I was a the highest point of the jump I placed a block. It sounds hard but you get used to it after a while. Then I put a candle at the top.
I tell you something, there is just something epeen inflating about standing above the clouds.
Anyway, it helps because now if I am lost I just look around a bit and I eventually see that 1x1 dirt tower.
(Oh, and I used leather armor, not wasting iron to jump down from. (And yes, use leather armor, with armor and full health you can survive.) )
You're better to just bring extra of something, I generally bring 128 sands or more and stack 2 big vertical lines, when you're on top you can dig one to get back down without a scratch. (I prefer to waste sands on this, I generally have way more than I can spend, but I can always use dirt).

The only problem with it is that its permanent. Its also snowing forever. Its a bit lame. But he plans to make it seasonal eventually, so sometimes there would be snow, that would be great.
Still you can remove or put back the snow with the editor, problem is when you remove the snow nothing melts on its own, so all the snow and ice you have to remove.
Alright, I have started a server just for us Dfans. Send me a pm if you want to join. I will be creating an official thread for this as well tomorrow (Firday) with more information.

And that sucks Daemaro. Haha diamond is so hard to find as well. I'm going to make a mineshaft next, but I'm working on perfecting my tree farm.

I love snow, but its too permanent for my taste.
