When I read about the real money AH I was like O.O but then realized this could be a good thing in the long run. I encourage everyone to ready EVERYTHING first esp. the QA's and interview before making a QQ comment. Anyway great job and thanks for this great article!
And btw, I LOVE the UI so far! Kudos to Mike Nicholson and his team! Look at those icons and the banner system, so awesome. I'm really pumped up!

I love all loot fest kind of game! I will be playing all of them for the next few years. Loot fest games I'm looking forward to: LotR: War in the North,Torchlight 2,Borderlands 2 and of course Diablo 3.
I'm very surprised to see how many people here outsmarts the blizzard employees with economy doctor degrees with just a simple thought about the matter. This must be a very smart userbase.
I'm pretty sure they have their reasons and it is not "We wanna get lots of riches, mwuhuahuahua! ROFLMAO!!!11!1!11". The RMAH is not that bad as many of you have pointed out. The items will not be that expensive so that everyone will do that for a living or to get job-equivalent sums of money. In fact, I worry more about the long-term deflation since the best items won't be salvaged thus will only accumulate in number. But I'm sure they also foresee that.
About the PVP and not giving it an incentive to be an e-sport. Come on, seriously? In all these years I've played Diablo II enough to get pretty much all build available, and almost never got into PVP. The addition of arenas and probably some achievements make me think about it, but Diablo I and II were NEVER meant and NEVER more played due to PVP. D3 will be the only one with actual incentive to it, but have that feature and being an e-sport are two totally different approaches.
And all the people who are talking about not playing the game, I'm pretty sure you're lying. Even if you were right about Blizzard screwing the game up, it would still be one of the games that EVERYONE who is a fan to genre will play. So whine all you want, you will still be buying it the moment it's out and probably will be the best Diablo game you have ever seen.
So, there are no skill points, correct? Am I able to swap the skills I want to use at will? Does that mean that will be no reason for me to create a new character of the same class of my old one other than start playing with friends and get a character to follow then up?
I didn't read all 9 pages of this thread, but from my first impressions I was a little upset at the RMT AH. After taking a step back and thinking about it, I am all for it. It's a really great idea to give those who find something they can't use or trade a chance to sell it and gain something from it.
There is nothing that this can do to impact your game play. It opens up your options for customization's and builds. For the people whining "oh no this ruins PVP", move on this game is not your PVP chalice.
My only real problem with the RMAH is its effect on PvP. It doesn't sound as if PvP will be based on pre-structured character classes, and that instead you will be able to take your own build into the arena????? (Not sure though, missed this info if it's up.) If that's the case, players who purchase off the RMAH will quickly outclass players who choose to farm for their gear. Bummer, because PvP was one of the additions I was really looking forward to. As far as the campaign goes, I'm sure it will be fun as hell, and I couldn't care less about the RMAH in that respect.

~ If stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out? ~
After reading the post I was furious, but i think now it's only a matter of execution:
- No montly fee, but blizz get's some money from RMAH to make good patches, new areas, a new mostertyp or keep dupers and hackers out of the game
- Permanet Inet connection, not a problem for me at last, once in a while it would be handy but not a real concern if you have a stable connection. If it makes the life of botter impossible, I welcome it.
- only 10 Char slots, well that one is an easy fix if it turns out to be a big problem, I dont think it's too hard to add (probably with an expansion?) some 5-10 slots
- you could buy items in D2 via 3rd Party, it's not completly new, I rather trade secure and give some fee to blizzard.
My only concern is the replayability. If I level up all 5 chars, get them decent/good gear, what else is there for me? I dont need a second wizard, I'm better of just swap some gear and use different runes/skills...
I will have to see the game and the economy for some month/years to judge it... hopefully blizzard is right with their decisions becouse I like the diablo universe very much.

You have to wonder about the competence of the development team after this, though. :\
Any news on the actual beta will go public? I want to actually play the game and get a feel of what the systems work. I understand that most of the folks and all the diablofans are a little bit skeptic about these changes. But I think one needs to try them first and experience them and then come on here and give your two cents. It's not the first impression that counts, it's the last one. That's what I think anyways.
So if I can get into the beta and see how all those things work then I will be able to choose a side
So Sixen, any word on the beta start date? Maybe at the conference call on Wednesday?
I haven't been on here in forever, but I am getting on just so I can help everyone not worry about the AH situation so much.
The number one reason not to worry about it is that you can sell your gold for real money. How does this fix the problem? Well, if people are only selling the best items of the RMAH but all you have is gold, just sell that gold for real money, then buy the item. The item being sold on the RMAH will sell for an equal amount of real money that it would cost in gold, SO if you don't have enough gold to covert to money to buy the item, you wouldn't have been able to afford it anyways. (Example: lets say the conversion rate of real money/gold is 100g = $1. I am selling the Wand of Death for $5, that would be 500g on the IGG AH. So if you have 500g, sell it for $5 and but my wand or if you have $5 and not 500g, then buy 500g for $5 and buy my wand for IGG, it works either way.) This, to me, ends all reasons to dislike the RMAH system. Farming sites would have existed and the same thing would have been happening, this just makes it safer and better.
The things I am least excited about are the no skill points. Sure, I like that I can switch my build around but I think the respec system would have been better if they could just figure out a way for the lower level skills to scale at higher levels so they are useful. That way everyone wasn't respeccing as soona s they got a new skill.
Also, I am strongly against the selling of characters on the AH, people should at least have to play the game. Maybe you can only buy a character off the AH if you have already leveled one of your own to level 60? Even then it just sound stupid.
Oh, also I liked the sound of the arena style PvP more than the death match PvP, but I haven't played it and they have and if they think it is more fun, it probably is. As for being more casual, I don't mind that, although i would like to see some sort of PvP ladder or at least see everyones wins/loses but it's not game breaking and I'm sure forums will hold tournaments...DF PvP Tourny? Sign me up. I'll put some gold into the pot!
My biggest problem with RMAH is I spent 5 straight years on D2 without touching these sites once. I actually found it ridiculous people would buy it and would ask myself, what's the use of farming then now? Didn't play multiplayer for a long time after learning that.
I'm hoping it becomes frowned upon and not too common for d3 online with this RMAH, or I'll be pissed if everyone starts doing it.
There's a lot of stuff to consider regarding the auction house.
First of all, most video games make the stance that all digital objects (items) are property of the developer. This auction house means that Blizzard effectively makes in game items property with a monetary value. To me this means Blizzard can't take a "too bad" approach to lost items.
Additionally, I anticipate botting to be a reality upon the release of a game. Starcraft 2 was released vulnerable to map hacks, and based on this interview, Blizzard assigns a higher value to its "e-sports" games than to its casual games so I don't expect D3 to be 100% secure. Couple that with the auction house and it's a recipe for heavy botting.
Further, you should anticipate issues with locked accounts. Realistically I can see individuals trying to filter stolen credit card usage through D3 and attempting to wash it out as money (assuming you can convert it to cash). I expect Blizzard will try to follow the digital trail but thieves usually can be clever going about this.
Finally, I don't doubt that the gold auction house will be used, assuming gold is auctioned off at the money house. It's easy to calculate the conversion costs for real money value->gold value.
Gold Value = Real Money Value * Gold/Dollar Value per gold (based on money auction house).

Well, I also think buying items this way is stupid but it would happen either way. Lazy people will always do thigs the lazy way whether it is through an in game AH or 3rd party site. So, if it's going to happen, at least Blizzard is making it safe and doing it in a way that even the players who actually play the game have a way to make some real money out of it and maybe be lazy every now and then and buy an item or two with the money they earned selling their items.

PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

Blizzard- catering to the lazy and inept since 2011
Congratz blizzard, you made real money an integral part to a video game. I liked it better when games were meant to be fun and away from the real world. Now the video game industry just keeps finding new ways to make things more "casual" and easier for people.
Yeah so I'm posting here now to complain since Blizz slapped me with a 3-day ban on the D3 official forums for calling them out about their rampant purging of all threads that dared to criticize Blizz selling out to cheaters with their cheater auction house.
This destroys the integrity of the game - all of it. Since literally everything you could possibly accomplish within D3 is tied to the gear you have, the ability to buy gears means you're buying success everywhere else. You don't have to work for it or earn it anymore, you just have to pay a couple of dollars and deck yourself out with legendaries.
Why those idiots think this is a good idea and good for the game is beyond me.

I do mostly agree with you, but I think you should look at it as a positive. I wish that 3rd party sites weren't an issure and people getting scammed didn't happen, but they are and people do and Blizzard is making an attempt to get rid of the shadey part. Less accounts getting hacked, less spam bots, less griefing.
It's not the games that are becoming more casual, but people are. It's just a side effect of the ever expanding technology of the internet, phones, computers, social networking. People like everything to be easy and everything is becoming apart of everything, therefore everything is easier. If Blizzard could make the game THEY wanted without having any concerns about 3rd party companies/websites or consumers, I am 100% sure the game would be way different. However, they don't get to decide what people want, and the majority want easy. Back when Diablo I and Diablo II came out video games were not as popular as they are now and they had a more "hard core" fan base, but that isn't the case nowadays.
I mean honestly, it's not Blizzards fault, it is the consumers fault. If they said screw it to the majority, they would not be where they are at today (Sucessful and Rich).
I have more to say on this but I don't really want to make it too long.
As things look right now, I'm afraid I'll have to agree with you - though I have faith in that Blizzard will not screw this up. Hopefully they will listen to the majority of the community, and change it soon, or they will most likely later from complaints.
Listening to the majority is exactly why the system got implimented, legitimate players who farm their own gear are the minority, unfortunatly.
The system Blizzard is putting in is to benefit the legitimate players because at least they get to make a profit off the majority who are willing to pay real money. Otherwise, all the profit would go to 3rd party websites.
Think of it like a lose-lose situation Becuase if they didn't put the RMAH in, there would be 3rd party websites which would do the exact same thing as the RMAH. If they do put it in, there is an official version of those websites, essentially but at least it is safe and will result in a hell of a lot less spam bots (I'm predicting).
