I seemed like blood to me. And I also interpreted it as Hell just managing to open up inside of Sanctuary. So it all the fire hadn't spewed forth yet. It's mostly just bodies everywhere and bits of bone sprouting here and there.
My most memorable moment was on about level 7 I think (on level after catacombs start) me and 2 buddies were playing, and we just finished level 5, and when to town and bought tons of armor, notable my friend bought a 7k helm from wirt (rip-off =P) and when went back to level 5 and started going down, we hit level six and found level 7 right after so we skipped level 6 thinking we were strong enough... We weren't we got killed on the first wave, but we had a town portal open. wanting to get out stuff back we devised a plan and had one person go in and make a portal, and another go in to make another portal. so we had three portals all set up like a triangle. One person wud stay in town, and another wud go in (sacraficing his life) and lure the mosters away wile the other ran in and grabbed as much as he could and ran back. We did that for a good hour till we got everything back =P
A moment I remember was when I played together with my cousin, we ran into the skeleton king and got separated while fleeing from him and I was heading for a dead end. I hid in some library and closed the door after me and went over to guide my cousin to my location so he could save me, when I returned to my own computer I was dead, sorrounded by Leoric and his minions, that's when I learned some monsters can open doors.
This is one of the funniest things i have ever read ROFLMAO! thanks.
My big brother introduced me to Diablo. Can't remember how old i was, but he said that for my birthday he got me a game and he brought his pc along to my parents' house. (He was around 24 and moved out) So he set up a network and installed Diablo and told to keep up with him, explaining to me that even though the axe i insist on using is NOT better than the puny looking (magic) saber he wants me to use. Eventually we ran into King Leoric. That fast moving TALL skeleton was the scariest thing i ever saw.
btw. i remember another one of the butcher's greetings "i will make weapons from you bones"

Norrec found the plate of Bartuc. Bartuc's plate found a nice host...

That's the smith from Diablo 2. Like pretty much everyone has said, the atmosphere were simply amazing and Diablo 2 never quite lived up to that. I remember for the longest time loving Arkaine's Valor so much because it was the only armor i got for a while that was actually tier 2 and changed the graphic of your character.

Mm hm. Until you could start getting the really good armor sets that gave so many points to all attributes, Arkaine's was one of the only suits of armor worth squat.
i could never figure this out, i remember people saying godly plate of the whales was a hack(the most popular hack) but was stormshield? i heard that it was, but it didn't make sense since it was in diablo 2
"AHHHH FRESH MEAT" I was scared pantsless everytime i saw the dead body outside the cathedral, coz i knew it meant i had the butcher quest. my brother and me still make stupid quotes and remarks about it today, like: i look into the fridge and pull out a tray of mince meat, "AHHHH FRESH MEAT" and we both crack up laughing.
I'll always remember my first encounter with The Butcher. The combination of him and the room he was in told me I was in for one hell of a ride.
When I first played the game, it took a few tries to finally get him.. Eventually I leveled myself to lvl 9 bought tonnes of pots and heal scrolls.. Then opened the door and by the end of it, I still had 2 belt slots left to use. It wasn't til after I managed to hit him enough time to kill him that I ventured into his room, and noticed what all that was. I was maybe 8-12 at the time. Most memorable moment of the game for me, that was some scary shit.

I think it was the full plate mail version of godly plate of the whale that was a hack. The item itself I think could be created but it was something complicated with item level plus prefix and suffix level that made a godly full plate mail of the whale impossible to create without hacks.
Stormshield was a unique shield as far as I remember but maybe there was a hacked version too?
My favorite memories expect for the initial experience and the countless hours put into the game was reading all the 3@30 stories on the old b.net forums and reading peoples intricate strategies to get through
My favorite moment:
Well, as many others have said: "Ahhh! Fresh Meat!"
Another good moment:
Realizing I couldn't hurt the Warlord of Blood with Magic. (Using a sorcerer)
A final good moment: When I was 23, remember, this was in 2011. I was playing through the catacombs and the music was creeping me out more and more. Eventually I hear those strange voices, and I literally turn around and freak out a little bit. I just couldn't handle the heat.
Never got the same scare in D2.(Even if it is awesome )
The catacombs. I'm surprised no one has said anything about this. It's so creepy. The music, the atmosphere, the monsters, all the eerie baby crying sounds... Gave me chills. And to add to that you have the Halls of the Blind.
